It's a corner case. Hard to account for all of those.

Probably more common than some might imagine. A lot of people have poor coping skills and are just prone to addiction (if they can't get "that" fix they will find some other one).

Depends on the reason. If you're avoiding takeout/delivery of anything to quarantine/isolate, or because it's unhealthy, or because you just don't like Chinese food, then it's perfectly reasonable. If you are avoiding it because think that you have a higher chance of getting COVID-19 from a Chinese restaurant than literally any other take out restaurant (or any daily activity at all outside of your home), then yeah... that's extremely dumb.

In addition to what other people have said, I think it also has to do with the fact that package stores are often not just for booze. The primary one in my old hometown was a package store/convenience store which was also the only game in town if you didn't want to drive to the supermarket in the next town over. This is true of package stores in a lot of rural and suburban areas.

The cynic in me also thinks the lottery has something to do with it. Package stores also almost always have the lottery. The lottery has already taken a major hit during the outbreak, and closing package stores would further strain what is normally a huge revenue source (not to mention the sin tax revenue from booze sales).

My cynical assumption is that the booze Co's have a stronger lobby.

There are two reasons

1) you can’t quit Alcohol cold turkey and don’t want Alcoholics clogging up hospitals

2) Liqour stores are classed in Food and Beverage

I'm fully loaded with gift certificates and ordering as much as I can to help. Ordered from Bayberry for dinner this evening.
I wish I could rep you 2x for this! Bayberry is our absolute FAVORITE restaurant in the entire area, and not being able to go there on our weekly night out is killing us. Glad you're helping keep them in business.

And yes--the owners are Chinese-American, and just as if not more concerned about the virus than us on this thread!

Aren't PA stores state-run stores for alcohol? They were when I lived there.

Another thing (if already mentioned, sorry) is that you don't want people travelling as much. If MA shuts down, but say NH doesn't, there is going to be an increase in road trips.

I believe he's talking about Bayberry Beer Hall in Providence, not the Bayberry vegan cafe in Woburn.
