The numbers are going up pretty much everywhere in the US.

Illinois has 20,000 new cases in the last week. I lived in Chicago for a while and have family in Illinois. There is a very real "I ain't scared" mentality there for everything, and it's not aligned with politics. It's just a midwestern attitude that they will persevere through anything.

hmm not sure why they said it's contained then. The guy who said it has a PhD and works in science so he didn't just fall off the turnip truck as far as I can tell.

I really don't think intelligence or education has much to do with it. My neighbor has a PhD and won't even go in her backyard without a mask, but another friend with a PhD who lives in Colorado is snapping selfies at a brewery with a crowd of people.

well on this forum I constantly hear people say how educated Boston is and this is why certain areas are doing well covid wise. Not sure how that can be justified with how much the numbers have gone up. I think most people I see anywhere are wearing a mask regardless of what their background is. I don't think having Boston return to their downtown offices would be a smart idea right now. I was just surprised to see that a pharma company in a major city had made that decision for employees.

Because the employees of Big Pharma in the office parks of metro Chicago mostly car commute and live in single family home suburbia where it's very well contained. For example, Abbott Park is suburbia 30+ miles north of the city. The transmission rate is far higher if you live in high density housing and rely on public transportation. Metro Boston is no different. The hotspots are lower income areas with high density housing and public transportation.

I have some peers in management positions in other states. It's interesting when we talk and catch up how each region is doing things differently.

For instance, at my company, many are on remote work until at least Jan 2021, and it's looking like even beyond that. No real push to bring people back.

Meanwhile, friends in other states have their top management looking to bring people back 100% ASAP, and they've even had to make a case to push back against it. I believe after deferring 2-3 times they are now 100% in-person, and their state is one that is currently seeing a lot of cases.

WSJ had an article today about a company that had everyone come in. What's the issue? A simple search shows it's just a 15 person firm

Oh, well I'm convinced now. The virus situation has been contained in Chicago!
