Interesting meme that BOX put up on their FB page this morning, I never knew this:

https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...57134902_n.jpg

(I hope that works, its not letting me paste the picture......it basically says the first recorded tornado outbreak in the US occurred on this date in 1787 in southern New England.....clicking on the link should show it to you)

Also, interesting article by the Westchester paper. Seems long range has a possible brief heat-up the last week of August:

That's interesting and I wonder if population had something to do with it?

But it leads to 3 of my theories...

1. What we call extremes now most likely were occurring on a normal or more re-occurring basis in the 1700s. Heck, you might as well go back to 1400s as well.

2. We started keeping track of weather and events when we realized weather was looking extreme, amazing, or strange. Someone said "wow, we have to keep track somehow" and so the main NYC, Philly, ect stations began. Probably why we see late 1800s a lot in the record books.

3. Tornado Alley most likely wasn't in the plains way in the past. Which means jet stream was reconfigure or maybe even dipping to the Tropics or not even dipping to Canada.

August 1-15 time period lowest temp..

Bridgeport hit 56 last year. 58 this month (this morning)
Boston hit 59 last year. 60 this month (this morning)
Hartford(BDL) hit 51 last year, 54 this month (this morning)

So while it's impressive air to get in August, it's not like it's been a long time. lol 2 yrs in a row with a cool shot in August.

Many are splitting firewood today. Scared?

Temp departures so far this month. Looks like Mid Atlantic has cooler anomalies than New England does. Notice Islip up into MA more normal than anyone else around.

Got out of work today and started loading firewood to the front porch. I normally do this in mid to late September. It felt like fall out there. Leaves are already starting to change around my yard. I have also noticed there have been tons of canadian geese at the pond across from me. I usually see them in September in such large numbers. Migrating already from Canada early?

Matt Noyes a Meteorologist on NECN pointed out this.

1) Goldenrod is where it usually is in Sept.
2) People are calling in saying horse coats are thickening up a month early
3) Leaf change is accelerated everywhere..not just swamps he was saying
4) Some kind of webworm in Vermont that usually comes out in mid Sept..is already out now

I think we are in for a cold winter...

I counted two apples on our 6 trees this year. Last year we got nearly one and a half bushels and made five gallons of hard cider! I'll have a look at the Concord grapes. Last year we had more than I had ever seen before. Only time will tell.

There's 3 things I look for..

Leaves
Squirrels
Dog Shedding

Last year my dog was shedding into her summer coat starting May and I swear it was one LOOOONG continuous shed until October. That implied she went straight into her winter coat early.

She stopped shedding last month but hasn't shed much yet. I am seeing scattered leaf changes and its not stress. If it was very hot and wet then I would say its stress. This is the "start" of the process. Some earlier than others.

I haven't seen squirrels running around yet...
