GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A project dedicated to African American History was unveiled in Greenville Tuesday.

The city held a ribbon cutting for the Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza. The $1.9 million project honors the history of the former Shore Drive Neighborhood, which was a self-built, close-knit African American community.

The plaza is currently where the Sycamore Hill Baptist Church once stood 50 years ago. It has a tower where the church’s bell tower once was and walls that tell the story of the neighborhood.

Could this be THE start of the next phase for downtown?? Found this on the most recent city council meeting regarding the future hotel on Evans Street.

https://www.greenvillenc.gov/home/showdocument?id=20372 (starts on pg. 72)

It appears that a hotel is definitely on the radar, if not completely unofficially confirmed...

This is big, IMO.

Yes it is big...shows what you can do with some investment. Greenville built the parking deck behind this and can change the landscape on Evans with this project. I'm counting 8 stories there.

Have to assume that this would mean Hilton would not be in line for an Alumni Hotel in the future though, unless they are talking Embassy Suites.

Does anyone have any informtion on what's going on on the North side of Firetower road just east of the Bostic Sugg furniture store? There appears to be a new dirt road to the north of the property. Looks like they're prepping the land for something? Mabye apartments?

There was a zoning controversy about that tract I think. A small neighborhood is going in.

7-11 is probably coming to Greenville. 7-11 has come to an agreement to buy Speedway.
