I'm 28 and don't go out much but if I do want a blue moon real night on the town I want to make it a good one.
Listen I'm not saying that Vegas doesn't have a great nightlife. But it just doesn't compare to NYC. In Vegas, for the most part, the nightlife revolves around the 'usual supects' if you will. In that I mean there's how many 'hot spots'? NYC is just so much larger and the party scene is spread out over the entire city. There's WAY more 'hot spots'. You don't have to beat the same path like you would in Vegas.
The same goes for South beach in Miami. Exactly how big is South Beach? Sure there are bars and clubs that stretch futher into North Miami beach. But it's NO WHERE NEAR as vast as NYC is.
And if we start talking about 'other' things besides the bar scene for nightlife, NYC's restaurant scene crushes Vegas or South Beach. Sure you can see a show in Vegas (and a good one). But you can also do that in NYC, and a Broadway one at that.
I just don't understand how drinking in a casino, is more fun than drinking in an NYC bar..... And if you're doing any kind of serious gambling, you probably ain't drinking anyways. The club scene? Never was into that. I've been in clubs in both cities, they're both just as annoying to me. But I enjoy BS'ing when i drink. That's just my preference..........
One thing I will say about Vegas, it's alot easier for a tourist to find the party scene. After all, VEGAS is a tourist trap. Where in NYC, a tourist would be alot less likely to venture outside of Mannhattan. So in this regard, I would concede that Vegas would probably be better. I guess I'm looking thru the eyes of people living in these two cities, as opposed to being a tourist in one. There is a BIG difference between the two. And the more I thought about it, I can see why somebody would prefer Vegas over NYC. Everything is right at a tourist's finger tips in Vegas, where in NYC (yes even in Mannhattan), it's harder an less convienent than Vegas would be.
Chicago?...lol lol lol My man, you should trying tell someone who HAS NOT lived in Chicago, cause I have! MOST of Chicago's bars DO NOT have that 4am liquor license. Unlike NYC, that is the norm, '4 am'!
You do realize, that Mannhattan, is ONLY 24 sq miles of NYC's 330 sq mile city, right, you do know that?... Chicago's bar scene is beyond LAME! I think Chicago is a great city, don't get me wrong, but NOT the bar scene!
Rare staying in a bar after closing?... Maybe in Mannhattan cause everything is SO VISIBLE there, but try the outer boroughs, Brooklyn or Queens. There's more bars than I could shake a stick at, that I've stayed in til 6am or later.
There's 'life' outside of Mannhattan, many 'true' Ny'ers know this VERY well. Alot of tourist don't though. So, "woopdy doo" back at you!.....
I'll see your woopdy doo and raise. Vegas is 24/7 and NYC is not. Bottom line.

I was referring that the very best few things Vegas has to offer is better or just as good than what the very best top tier stuff NYC has to offer in terms of a weekend out on the town. It is also more concentrated and you can walk from place to place to place. Also easier to mingle with the elite there.
Yes there is a lot more to do in NYC if you are living in Vegas vs. living in NYC, but really not many people gonna do either, but if I'm just going to a city strictly to party for a weekend I would go to Vegas every time. I would go to NYC for museums and culture.
Also you mentioned for tourists... there are a bunch of hidden exclusive clubs and bars in Vegas that even frequent tourists don't know about.
My friends from h.s. and college are all split up from all around the country and it is hard to hang out and get together, one place we can all usually agree on is one or two meet ups in Vegas each year.
Also Vegas can compete on NYC restaurants, no problem. I mean, some of your best chef's left to go there...
Hey, I <3 NYC but it is really becoming less and less relevant and influential.

I guess that 'buffet's' are your idea of fine dining? Sure Vegas has 'some' upscale restaurants, but for the most part?......people dressed like slobs eating at buffets, is Vegas style!
And now Vegas is "influential"?.......lol lol lol I guess cause Vegas has such a diverse economy?...............
NYC has restaurants that require "clothes" up to restaurants that need reservations months in advance and jacket and ties are required. I was brought up near NYC and am very familiar with the "nightlife"---shows, restaurants, delis, bars, etc. NYC has the New Year's Eve "party" telecast nation wide, Vegas has local entertainment.
Bucharest was also called the Paris of the East at one time, and Detroit is hardly the Motor City anymore.
I think you have NYC confused with Chicago, especially Chicago's lame nightlife?... NYC is getting larger, not smaller. It has a population of around 8.3 million people!....
NYC is as vibrant as it ever was. It's also the, "The safest BIG city in America" (unlike Chicago). Which makes people not afraid to be out all hours of the night. Just cause Chicago rolls up their sidewalks at night, doesn't mean that NYC does....
