I think when you include metro areas though the only one that's probably just as safe as Boston metro in CA is San Diego.
Speaking only about homicides, L.A has a lower homicide rate than Boston. Metro Boston is very safe, appart of few cities like Brockton (with kind of low homicide rate, just the city is run down), Quincy, Mathapan and Dorchester, the whole Massachusetts as a whole is safe (except for Springfield)

Seattle has twice the violent crime rate of San Diego and Boston has 2.5 times the violent crime rate of San Diego, so I would not say they are all in the same boat.

Philadelphia 178, 1 more higher than 2007 at this time.

Projected to finish the year with 401 (homicide rate of 25.3, this would've finished 29th highest last year)

NYC up to 153 homicides through June 7th, this represents a 25% increase in murders over last year.

Over the last 28 days, murders are up 133% in NYC.

It's hard to believe Seattle has twice the rate of San Diego since Seattle is also considered one of the safest cities in the United States. Not sure about Boston, but compared to most other American cities the West Coast cities in general plus New York and recently Miami are in the same boat.
