Downtown Chicago is in the good area so it's probably about the same as NYC.

I would rank them:

Manhattan - Downtown
Manhattan - Midtown
Chicago - Downtown
Some photos by me just below 14th street. Note these are not in the skyscraper districts:

IMO, Chicago has the nicer skyscraper district, but overall city center NYC.

New York city is just so massive that many areas below 60th feel like a downtown area. Basically, put some areas between 14th and 34th in another city and it could serve as a legitimate downtown area.

Come on, definitely NYC as it is more exciting in vibrant. Although I think Chicago's is more beautiful, NYC's is just so massive and exciting.

Yea, I'm confused with the thread title of "downtown". Does the OP mean a CBD/skyscraper zone or just a general city core?

Exactly. I would consider anything below 60th as Central NYC just like people refer to Tokyo's 5 main wards as Central Tokyo.

Cities this massive don't necessarily have just one main activity, but spread out in a overall massive area....even places like Paris and London.

Assuming one is referring to Manhattan below 59th street, which is arguably a "core" or "downtown", there's lots of office jobs, shopping and entertainment the whole length, although parts of residential, yes it is maybe 4 times downtown chicago.

Employment Density in International Central Business Districts: Ranked by Density

Check the number of jobs. Manhattan has almost 4 times as many as "Chicago+".

I prefer the more human scale of most Of the buildings in NYC though If I had to pick any in anytime in history, I would go to Chicago 1900.

Based on the analogy to Chicago where Downtown includes residential and parks areas, New York City's downtown is the entire borough of Manhattan or New York County as is also called. There is no way to even compare these two based on size, population, architecture or prominence. New York City's "downtown" - the borough of Manhattan, if separated from the remaining four counties, would be by itself a 1.7M city dwarfing not just Chicago's downtown but the entire city of Chicago in many, many categories including office space, size of CBDs, number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered there, number of restaurants or cultural amenities such as theaters or art galleries and art museums. Manhattan is the urbanity condensed to the extreme: only a few places on the planet could even think about competing.
