i was just curios as to what newyorkers thing is the better looking downtown. i have never been to newyork but i know it has a massive downtown. i have been to chicago and it is also very large and there are many great looking buildings including the new 2000ft spire building currently under construction. im from minneapolis and i think its a good looking downtown but nothing compared to chicago or newyork.
This is a matter of preference but I prefer New York. First of all, if by "downtown" you mean the skyline/central business district, New York is unique in that it has two: what we call downtown (lower Manhattan) and Midtown Manhattan. So there are two distinct areas of the skyline. There are also more tall buildings jammed in so the NY skyline(s) seem like a solid wall of buildings and it's just more impressive to me. A guy from Chicago once told me that he preferred Chicago for the opposite reason: it was possible to pick out and appreciate individual buildings more easily. When I am down near the World Trade Center site, the way it looks right now with a vast open site and the buildings immediately around it clearly distinguishable from each other, it looks like Chicago to me.
Another thing I like about New York is that, because Manhattan is between two rivers, it's possible to get a great view of the city from across the water. The only way to really see Chicago's skyline behind water is to go out on a boat on the lake.
But they are both great cities with great skylines and you can appreciate them without really even having to rank them.
good post ^^^ Manhattan is just two skylines in one ( and both by themselves will be the largest in the nation). Manhattan is just a wall of buildings, but if you know this skyline, you can pick them out (especially from Jersey).
Looks-wise, I'd prefer Chicago.. I just find the architecture more interesting.. I'd say NYC has more to do though.
I agree that New York has a lot of things for tourists to do (whether it is within the central business district or outside of it).
