i was just curios as to what newyorkers thing is the better looking downtown. i have never been to newyork but i know it has a massive downtown. i have been to chicago and it is also very large and there are many great looking buildings including the new 2000ft spire building currently under construction. im from minneapolis and i think its a good looking downtown but nothing compared to chicago or newyork.
If you're asking "New Yorkers," shouldn't this be in the NY Forum?
I'd say Chicago has a better looking downtown/skyline. Yes New York is bigger, but its also grittier and a lot more dirty.
Plus Chicago's skyline is unique, with many different styles of architecture. Chicago is pretty much world famous for its architecture, which is where the skyscraper was invented btw
I think Chicago might have the best singular aesthetic views because of its lake setup, and many of its gems are clear cut visible from there, but Manhattan is quite a bit more impressive than Chicago and has a lot more architecture and more stuff to do. You just can't grasp it from one point.
Again, NYC does not have a "downtown" unless you are talking about the entire borough of Manhattan. Downtown Manhattan is Wall Street, or maybe what used to be the Twin Towers. That is a business district and really shuts down after 5 PM. People go Uptown, or Midtown, for Nightlife.
If you like clean streets and tall buildings...then Chicago is better. New York has more density and more buildings but you have to walk through smelly trash and hop over rats the size of small dogs to boot.

Hrrm... I don't know about THAT ... NYC along with many other cities in the country have changed a lot during the last 10 years. Certainly even Chicago has, millenium park, new east side, south loop dev has done a lot for the image. In 2001 summer I spent a lot of time in Chicago and NYC and then there was a pretty good difference in cleanliness, but not as much now. If I had to give the edge Chicago is cleaner, but you have to expect that, the foot traffic in Manhattan trumps Chicago by quite a bit, so there is going to be a lot more trash. Plus Chicago has a better alley network so the trash is well hidden. I have seen plenty of big ol rats in Chicago!
NYC is noticeably cleaner now than I remember in the late 90s for instance, it is also much safer.
I think they both have great downtowns the clear cut two best in America. New Yorks is much bigger and I would imagine it has far more activity considering its much bigger than Chicago. Chicago's skyline is more attractive in my opinion but I wouldn't expect its hustle be of that of a 8 million person city. Chicago still holds its own very well for a city its size in activity. I like both to be completely honest.
Its very hard to say considering certain pics...ny is ginormous but chi is assembled so beautifully..it utilizes the lake perfectly and there are always festivals and concerts during the summer..FOR FREE lol
New York is an amazing place like no other. There are definitely parts of Chicago that are "Manhattan-like" (as much as any non-New York place can be), but most of Chicago has a strikingly similar feel to Brooklyn, but with fewer rowhouses (we do have them in some neighborhoods, but most of our 19th century buildings have three or four feet between them). I'm always amazed at how much Brooklyn feels like home to me when I visit.
