Education - Louisville, Kentucky

Education - Education And Child Care

Education in Louisville mirrors the rest of the state and includes elementary school (kindergarten through fifth grade in most areas), middle school or junior high (in most locations, sixth grade through eighth grade), high school (generally ninth through twelfth grade), and postsecondary institutions. Most Kentucky schools and colleges are accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Along with many Southern states, unfortunately, Kentucky suffers from a negative stigma when it comes to education.

Some statistics—such as ranking 47th in the nation in percentage of residents with a bachelor’s degree, or an estimated adult illiteracy rate of about 10 percent—seem to justify the stereotype. Others, however—like being ranked 14th in educational affordability and being named the 31st-smartest state using a formula by author Morgan Quitno, which placed Kentucky ahead of western states like California—suggest that the negative stereotype might be somewhat exaggerated. To bolster this assertion, Louisville’s main rival, Lexington, ranks 10th among U.S. cities in the percentage of the population with college degrees, and most studies agree that, all in all, Kentucky is making progress in the area of education.
