Description: This independent, Roman Catholic, liberal arts university in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood is the largest traditional, nonprofit private university in the state. It is a small school with several thousand students. The institution opened in 1950 as Bellarmine College, established by the Archdiocese of Louisville, who named it after the Catholic saint Robert Bellarmine. In 2000 the board of trustees changed the name to Bellarmine University. While offering one doctoral degree, it is currently classified as a Masters-I university. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the school is perennially ranked as a top-tier master’s degree university in the South by U.S. News & World Report, and the W. Fielding Rubel School of Business is one of the select few to receive accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
