Yes. I lived alone for many years and felt very secure with my large dog RIGHT THERE with me.
Also the dog we have now is great therapy for my partner and he wants her there, which is fine with me.
All my dogs have slept in the bed (have only owned one at a time), but if they wanted to sleep elsewhere i would have made sure they could. We had a crate for one dog and she spent time there, but not at night.
Haven't had a dog in years, but sure, I'm fine with a smaller dog on the bed. Not so much with a bigger dog. The cat likes sleeping on the bed better when I'm not in it, but every once in a while deigns to sleep with me beside him.
We're on our third dog now but he's the first one that sleeps with us. He's a 21 pound labradoodle and he's my wifes service dog. His main task is detecting migraines. He can tell she's getting a migraine before she can. That way she can take her medicine sooner to reduce or even prevent a migraine. He sleeps right beside her very night.
When we had 6 spaniels in the house (five Cavalier and one Cocker), they were all in the bed with us. Plus the two cats. That was when we went from queen to king. Now we have three Cavaliers. One sleeps at the head between the pillows, one sleeps on my pillow above my head, and the third curls up between us like a cat would. Used to have stairs when we left the doggie door open all night, but stopped doing that when we moved north. We put them on the bed and they get up when I do. A couple of them can jump down, but they don't.
I don't have any dogs, but if I did, they would not be allowed in bed. That sounds unsanitary.
