I've seen that many times with our big German Shepherd curled up in the small bed and our little Bichon laying on the big pad. For us, I'd bet our little dog staked out the big pad first, so our big GSD used the little bed.
I dogsit my ex-roommate's pit whenever he goes out of town, and the last time I did he curled up into a little rounded dog bed I got for my Westie (and it's almost too small for her). I don't have to picture of it here, or I'd post it. I watched him as he nestled his way until he was curled up on it. I think he knew he looked pretty crazy in it but after all that trying it was the principle of the matter, forget comfort.
Hahaha! Figures! When I first adopted my girl, a doberman, she was only 25lbs at the time but she always went in my cats bed, which was a fairly small one. Then I bought her her own bed. She eventually grew out of that one, but still laid half in half out. Dogs are so funny.
