Default More Pony Express

Who did this crime? What happened when he got caught?
Why did he commit this crime? 3 part question, 3 part answer!

This man was a relief rider for the Pony Express and also supplied meat to a certain station. He murdered a station keeper.

If no one can answer in a couple of days more clues will come.

Bob Jennings was a hunter and provided meat for the stations in eastern Wyoming. He was a relief rider. At Cottonwood Station, 21 miles west of Fort Laramie, he killed station keeper Hod Russell. Jennings was later hung at Fort Laramie for the crime on May 21, 1865. One story is that he was taking revenge for his brothers death.

Claim jumpers comment "If no one can answer in a couple of days more clues will come." got me wound up.

Continuing in the History vein...

IN 1842 Col. John Fremont (or whom Fremont County is named), lead a 5 month expedition into Wyoming to South Pass. The U.S. Congress published Frémont's report, touching off "a wave of wagon caravans filled with hopeful emigrants". He lead two additional expeditions in 1843 and 1845 that included parts of Wyoming. The second in 1843 demonstrated that South Pass was the best route through the Rockies. On all of his expeditions he relied on Kit Carson and a French trapper as a guide. A mountain range and a reservoir in Wyoming are named after that French trapper, but the name is misspelled.

What was the French trappers name and what are the Wyoming features that are named after him?

The trappers name was Basil Cimineau Lajeunesse. The features that are named for him are:

The Seminoe Mountains and Seminoe Reservoir.

Though thought that these features were actually named for the Seminole Indian Tribe the name Seminoe is the Americanized spelling for Cimineau.

Some additional information I think is interesting:

Seminoe Dam Site
Origin of Name:*
Far to the north may be seen the Seminoe Mountains, named for Seminoe Lajeunesse, a French trapper and trader. It is said that Lajeunesse's real name was Basil and that the name Seminoe was corrupted from a French nickname, "Cimineau," although some reports have it that Seminoe was the name given to him by his Snake squaw. Lajeunesse established a trading post on the Overland Trail above Devils Gate. Early in the sixties, with two men and fifteen pack animals loaded with goods, he started out to trade with the Sioux. On the way the party was attacked by Indians in Bates Hole, southwest of Casper, and Lajeunesse was killed. Lajeunesse was a successful hunter and trapper, and the old settlers who remember him say that the mountains were called Seminoe to perpetuate the name of one of the bravest and truest pioneers of Wyoming. He accompanied Fremont on the first expedition into Wyoming, and was one of those chosen to make the ascent of Fremont Peak.*He is reported to have accompanied United States troops as a scout on a number of expeditions. His uncle, Gabriel Lajeunesse, was, so tradition says, the hero of Longfellow's "Evangeline." It is interesting to note that some recent maps show these mountains as the Seminole Mountains, the compilers of the maps evidently assuming that they were named for the Seminole Indians and that the "l" had been*omitted by mistake from the maps on which they were shown as Seminoe.

That was interesting.

Okay this will probably be an easy one, but I can't think of anything else.

How did Martha Jane Cannary say she got her better known and famous name of Calamity Jane? What area of WY was she in at the time?

Martha Canary claimed she got her famous nickname—Calamity Jane—near what would become Sheridan (pop. 15,804). Canary, a scout for the U.S. Army, had accompanied a captain on a mission to stop an American Indian uprising in 1872. When the captain was shot, Canary returned him to the fort. She said the appreciative captain gave her the name “Calamity Jane, the heroine of the plains.”
