I wonder if that was the smoke that I seen. - these comments were all in a row, posted by different posters, prompting me to exclaim, "I can't take it anymore!"
Then you don't live in this part of The South, cuz 'round here sale/sail/sell are all pronounced "sayull."
Well I'm pretty sure we don't live in the same town or county.
But I've lived in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas and everywhere I've lived, people say "sale" (as in snail) and sell (as in shell). Actually in some areas I have heard "SA-yul" and "SE-el" but there's definitely a difference.
But hey, that's just my personal observation. Yours differs, and that's OK.
