This has been the best Dec i have had since 1997. 10" + of rain and no 80's yet. Looks like the end of the month could see mid 80's inland. Water temps on the gulf should keep me around 78f. That 10" is more than i had in all June, July and Sept.

Northern Europe at 2 pm Central European Time and (1 pm GMT, 3 pm Finland, 4 pm Moscow).

Rather strong cold wave taking hold over Northwestern Russia right now, clearly influencing the cold air in Sweden. Here it is about -2°C, being moderated by the Baltic Sea remaining fairly mild as can be seen in this heat map. Temperatures within the purple areas vary from -17°C in Swedish Lapland to about -23°C near 62°N in Russia.

Far East Asia (Hokkaido/Eastern Siberia/Northeastern China) at about 10 pm today:
As seen here, there is still actual moderation offshore from Spassk-Dalny on the border lake between Russia and China, indicating the seasonal lag is still rather strong. In spite of this, there are some chilly temperatures east of that lake, mainly on inland Hokkaido. Moving north, it still appears as though southerlies are mildening Khabarovsk at the moment, given an estimated air temp of just -11°C, even though the seasonal lag is eliminated that far inland.

looks like there's a low to the southeast of the Baltic Sea pulling cold air northwestward from Russia into Finland

Wind direction looks that way, yes. The Baltic Sea is a major divide in early winter, so often shielding peninsular Sweden from the Arctic outbreaks. Even on my latitude in Russia today, in spite of being quite a lowland, it was -20°C at 2 pm. That is something that has only happened once in December at all during my lifetime, when such air has broken through the Baltic Sea barrier and also the additional supporting layer of the maritime Atlantic influence, that is even more dominant.

Current Polar Vortex and pretty much all month. Strong and in 1 piece over the Arctic. No arctic blasts in the U.S

Projected Polar Vortex in 10 days. Split and in 2 pieces. One into Scandinavia and one into Hudson Bay. Note the anomaly, weaker. Weaker PV always brings a colder pattern to mid Latitudes. Don't be fooled though. It's frigid under those pieces.

We should prepare for Arctic blasts and snowy pattern in Eastern U.S come January

GFS hinting at the beginning of the cold snowy pattern. Snowstorm New Years Eve/Day as the phasing of the Northern and Southern Jet streams blow up a storm

And a clipper in the picture as well.

Maybe a Triple Phased Storm coming soon?? Those are rare. Polar, Northern, and Sub Tropical Jet phasing.

Maybe things will get interesting for the deep South as we enter into January.

Last night's GFS runs showed snow over central LA on Jan 3!

67F here at 1 PM; I wonder if it will reach 70F.

It hasn't reached the 70's here since Dec 2nd.
