One thing is for sure... This winter is not set up like last winter..
  • Fire hose Pacific jet not there like last year in Novermber. We aren't getting that fast West to East warm Pacific flow, Northern Jet stream dipping into the U.S
  • Sea Surface Temps in North Pacific and ENSO regions is different.
  • QBO is negative now.
  • Sun Spots much more quieter this year with many days of blank sun
  • SouthWest Ridging more dominant than SouthEast Ridging

Fascinating to watch especially in the Fall-Winter-Spring months..

So you got this core of cold in the Northern Hemisphere (not always a perfect circle) and you got these Lobes that make it look like a flower pedals.

All those lobes rotate around this core. Sometimes digging down further south then others sending down cold air..

Sometimes it's a long extended lobe.

And there's even points of weakness where the warm ridge penetrates though this cold core and those are the time the Arctic goes above normal.

In motion.... see how everything rotates and how our weather patterns come about?

Really no changes here in FL from last Oct to Nov. This Oct was hotter than last and this Nov so far is a hair cooler. Last Nov i had no rain and no rain so far this Nov, this Oct i had a little more rain that last Oct. So really not much change.

Yeah, unlike last year I think December will feature a warm west/cold east pattern. Probably a flip in Jan.

I have found the upper level winds seem to control the lobes to some degree.

Especially the polar vortex.

https://earth.nullschool.net/#curren...120.577,37.919

When it "splits", or deforms, it can force those extreme cold conditions down where I don't want them.

For example

https://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/0...120.577,37.919

That resulted in

https://earth.nullschool.net/#2014/0...120.577,37.919

Which was no fun at all.

Love that site. Yeah, Upper level flow controls the weather patterns and where those lobes go.. It's really a marriage out there. So many things work together to make a pattern happen from the Pacific to the Atlantic. I see you're in TN now? I'll look forward to your winter posts in this forum for sure. Always love hearing about the Ohio Valley weather

Oh man... That SW Ridge better come back!
