It's 84 F here, how in the world is it 78 F there? I understand the coast can be cooler than inland, but the difference is rarely more than three or four degrees.
Jesus the -17c in Ithaca this morning stands out like a sore thumb, all of their other record lows in April are like -10. If you look at the graph on accuweather it's like a random bump in the record lows chart
It dropped to -10 F (-23 C) in Grayling, MI this morning, broke the old record by 13 F (7 C). Ridiculously cold for early April, this would be below normal even in mid January.

Of course the cold is staying bottled up north won't drop below 60F here
Temperature rose quickly though, it's currently 32 F (0 C) there right now. Seems like Michigan can see some impressive late season cold blasts, probably due to the seasonal delay caused by the Great Lakes.
That same place dropped to -30 F (-34 C) on the last day of February of 2014, and had three nights below -20 F in the first six days of March as well.

This type of cold in April just seems amazing to me, days already over 12 hours!

Now 76.8F here, definitely good for April.
True, but things are normally still frozen with a lot of snow cover up north in early April, so cold can still be potent. Although obviously not to the same extent as in January.
The sun angle definitely makes a difference though, the same air mass in January would likely produce -30 or -40 F temperatures instead of a mere -10 F.
