Our coldest average temperature is 10c . There are types of flowers that Come out in winter but I don't consider it spring due to the vulnerability and possibility of some serious cold. Coldest temp in January was 18 and now 15 for February and the whole winter.
Currently -14 F/-26 C with a windchill of -29 F/-34 C in Saranac Lake, NY. The low this morning was -30 F/-34 C and the lowest windchill was -45 F/-43 C. Insane cold.
Like I've said before running in -15 or -20C is no big deal with just a sweatshirt and some long pants. I've ran in those temps on several occasions. Activity warms up your body quite well.
Hell, I've seen people running in -30C with -40C wind chills in Lake Placid, with proper gear of course.
Your right, wasn't bad. Only did 2 miles. I will admit, was a little tight and tense at first. You have to understand, this is extreme for this area so it's not like the body is used to it. But wasn't bad. Only thing was my throat dried out because I was breathing through mouth. But it's better than those disgusting warm muggy days. Ugh, I don't want them back!
Some of those are all-time records for the month of February, for example in Islip and Bridgeport.
Whoa. You're right!
Also... It may be the coldest in 22yrs for NYC but the last time it was that cold or colder in February was 53 yrs ago! -2° in 1963. So we rarely (recently) have gotten this cold in the month of February.

Lunchtime Temps EST.
Great thing about days like this, we get to see some Ocean Effect Snow and Cool Cold Clouds over the Atlantic
Its below zero(F) 4500' over the Atlantic now & at the sea surface in low 40s.

Nasal breathing may detract from your time but there's much less risk of burning the lungs in frigid weather. Of course, you could breathe through the mouth if it's covered with a balaclava but again that would hamper your time.
Burned lungs; been there, done that. For 24 hrs. unable to get a decent breath of air. Miserable. Wife set up a vapor humidifier and fortunately I recovered.

The cold dry air bothers my throat when I go out. Right after it I get out, I start coughing. After 10 or 15 seconds I stop coughing but it does tickle my throat.
