Hmm. Maybe brisk walking uphill in mountains could get close? Haven't in a wind chill of -18°F though. Having your skin get a little nipped doesn't sound like you did fine, though. I suspect our bodies react differently to temperatures, your comments about biking in warm weather don't match my experience at all.
Yea, but I'm taking about exposed skin, just as face without a scarf or balaclava.
AH, yeah you will go numb pretty quick. You do slowly build the tolerance though but only to a certain point.
It is the wind that does it though not the temperature. A non windy -30C is much easier than a windy -20C.
I took some pics after being outside in -38C temperatures with wind uncovered, 5 minutes of that and my face was like a tomato. Any longer than that and frostbite would occur if uncovered.
So much for NYC being warmer than Philly on low temps. Our lowest at the airport was 8F, same for my back deck in town. Places in Cape May county near the shore stayed above 10F. This is when our more southern location works for us, and against NYC. Even the UHI and the ocean couldn't help NYC breaking their zone and going below 0F.
NYC normally is slightly warmer than Philly at night, due to its coastal location and stronger UHI. You guys got lucky, to put it simply. Has little to do with being slightly further south, since you're also further inland. The models also had Philadelphia in the line of fire just a few days ago.
Nothing too zone busting for me, luckily. Islip which is a borderline 7a/7b (avg annual low is 5F), reached 0F.

Well, 0F might seem like nothing extraordinary, but it was a monthly record low after all. And this is only the second time it has happened in the past 30 years. Doesn't happen often, to say the least. Perhaps more impressive is today's daytime high of 13 or 14F, which is also a monthly record. No matter which statistic you look at, today is the coldest February day at Islip, ever.
Eastern LI was colder. Westhampton hit -4F, but it wasn't for the usual reason which is super-radiative cooling. In fact, it was a -4F with a lot of wind and the wind chill even reached -28F there this morning, a number which I've never seen on Long Island. Ever.
