In early February, did the two meet much further north near New York City and that's how we got New England snow storms?

Yup but each senario is different. Clippers and Coastals can alter the senario.

Here's Feb 2nd.

Notice its more south/north in the east. We were on the right side of trough along the polar jet stream which had tropical jet interaction.. It was also digging down south too but instead of it being flatter and south of us it was rising north to our east.

Not sure if im explaining right. Pretty amazing the Atlantic or southeast ridge isn't fighting back yet.

You can view all the maps with the archive here.
Daily Weather Map

Go to Jan 27th and check it out. We were inside the trough with a strong coastal storm.

Then look at January 4th.. Look where the trough axis is. West of where it is now from the plains to Texas. And a noticeable southeast ridge. So storm track was to the Great Lakes and we were on the warm side of things.

what was my real low? Seems like lots of variation on cold mornings with calm wind. House thermometer read -7°F but I think it's usually a bit too warm due to being against a wall.

found this neat table on smhi:s homepage, comparing this winters average temperature up untill 16th february with the last winters average for a few swedish stations. 61-90 winter average and record warmest month is also displayed.

this winter, albeit mild, will not be near last winters record breaking warmth.

Quite cold from what I'm hearing from my family in northern New England. Concord, NH new record low this morning, -21F; coldest temperature so far this winter season. Whitefield, NH -33F this morning. Impressive cold given the hours of darkness are less as we approach March.

Your current February seems rather similar to what eastern France experienced back in 1986. Consistent cold throughout the month and very cold air for the location just a few days from meteorological spring.
