so when do we think there will be a long term break in the cold in the NE US? I dont even mean a return to normal average I just mean a return to at least close to freezing or above as opposed to this silly ultra cold we have going on? To think it hit almost 40 yesterday by me as a high and today's low is potentially negative 5 is just mind boggling!

The current pattern is supposed to change during the first week of March, so we should be seeing the effects of that during the first or second week of March.

Here's the latest GFS for northern CT. About 2-3 days above freezing next 16 days. (anything past 10 days can change big but seems like that's not happening past 4 weeks. lol)
Funny someone reminded me that above upper 40s is now considered warm for March. Low-mid 40s is normal. I'm having a hard time finding above freezing still. LOL
Rivers are thickening up. I saw NWS posting about Ice Jams in Virginia.
Winter in the south right now and tonight. Im seeing 3-4" snow reports from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Snow pack expanding.
Kinda. Definitely some bad assumptions there, in particular that each snow storm was an independent event. I think a stuck pattern was responsible for all of them. Another issue is estimating probabilities of events that happen much less frequently than the period of record is hard.
This should help understand the current setup happening right now..
First... looks very sunny in California at this moment. Either that or the Satellite is broken. lol
Second.. Ridge in the West pushing up in turn digs a trough in the East...
Third ... A Vortex in that position so far south in Latidude is going to send very cold air down.
Forth ... Active Sub Jet meets Polar Jet = Winter Precip.
