I'm 39 and have been a gamer since Atari. We've had all the systems prior to XBox 360's arrival. We have the XBox 360(elite)and are diehard Rockband players. I love the guitar(expert bass is fun)and hubby does the drums(he's 35). With Rockband 2 coming out next month, I don't see us stopping anytime soon.
We like the sports games too, but have set them aside since Rockband came out. It has been in the system ever since.
Can people still be pro-active gamers well into their 30s, 40s, and so on?
I mean, I'm a young professional gamer. If I was enployed, I still might be a gamer (little time for it though) even if I was past 40.
One of my friends, he's a bit older than me (31) and spends around 35-40 hrs a week on video games. At one time I did too because I was an addict to COD4
I'm 44 and have been playing on-line games (mmorpg) for years.
I'm of the Asheron's Call generation .
Moved on to DAOC (Dark age of Camelot) and more recently WOW (World of Warcraft)
I must admit I'm loosing interest. I find that even though these types of games have dramaticaly improuved in graphics over the years, the basic 'Lord of the rings characters' and 'sandwich' type fighting is getting redundant.
I gave the space type games a try but my brain doesn't like the 360 deg. dog fighting flying thing. My son has all the Xbox 360, wii , playstation etc. consols but I'm more of a keyboard player.
Anyways.... I'm still interested and looking at what's new and upcoming.
My grandmother back in the 70s took a liking to Atari's Kaboom and Freeway. She also had a hand-held Mattel racing game. Her and I used to play Atari all the time.
I think a lot of people who grew up in the 70s and 80s will always be into video games no matter how old they get.
Most people enjoy games from cards, golf, bowling throughout their entire lives. I don't see video games as any different only more sophisticated. I am a gen x'er that will be playing games into my 40s and beyond.
My husband is a gamer that will be 40 this year. He has bonded with our boys playing games over the years. ( Now they are 13, 17 and 2.) Our two year old has already tried playing with the computer when he is on and we give him a broken controller when they are playing with the other systems we have.
My grandma who is 82 asked us to bring the Wii to her house so she can try bowling. She said that she misses bowling so much and wants to try doing it on there.
Personally, I am not a gamer but I would rather have my husband home at night than spending all night out in a bar.
I agree that probably most Gen X ers will be playing games for many years to come.

That's me. I'm 44.
From the mid-70s,to later 80s,I practically lived at the arcade.(I had one about 5 minutes bike ride from home)
Oddly,I had no intrest in home systems,'til a friend loaned me his Genesis,in '99. Not long after that,I bought a PS1 and I haven't been the same since.
I love gaming.
