I credit video games for helping to keep my mind and reflexes sharp and I’m in my 40’s. While I’m sure that some 19 year old has keener reflexes he may lack the wisdom and self control that help make me an exceptional gamer.
Besides, modern day video games are paving the way for the matrix-like future which will allow feeble Baby Boomers to think they’re still active long after their bodies have failed them. I completely believe that in the not-so-distant future residents of senior citizen homes will be plugged in to machines that will trick their minds in to believing that they’re able to run through golden fields of tall grass under beautiful blue skies.
There was an episode of the original Star Trek in which the first captain of the starship Enterprise, Christopher Pike, was attempting to return to a planet where he could live out the remainder of his days in a world of illusion. This was an attractive proposition because his body had been horribly burned. That episode ended by asking the rhetorical question, “Which is better, illusion or reality?” Every video gamer knows the answer to that…
I'm 41 and I play video games still. In fact I have 12 different systems in my game room, the old school stuff up to the more recent Nintendo Wii.
I had my daughter when I was 30, I used to sit her in front of the TV when I played non violent games like Mario and Sonic. She got a HUGE laugh out of it. I even had an old controller that had shorted out, I cut the cord off of it and she would sit down and pretend to play with me. She did the same thing with an old keyboard she had. Then when she got old enough, she started playing. Now she loves games as much as I do.
Can people still be pro-active gamers well into their 30s, 40s, and so on?
Of course we can! And even well beyond the 40s, 50s, 60s "and so on". Case in point: I'm an avid gamer. I'm also a middle-aged surburban mom . Fortunately for me, my teen son is also an avid gamer and, fortunately for both of us, we enjoy the same genres, even if we don't necessarily like the same games. Our favorites tend to be RPGs and MMORPGs but we play lots of different things, too.
It's great having a hobby that a parent and teen can share.
I am still gaming at 55.
I have this little belief that if I continue playing video games that it will keep my brain active and my eye/hand coordination intact, just maybe Alzheimer will not get to me as soon, if ever. Wishful thinking on my part
For some reason, people think these games are only for teenagers. The target audience is actually older. Who has the money to purchase all of this stuff?
