LOL...US women gets to try again with no one around to jostle or distract them
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The Latest on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (all times local): 12:40 p.m. The United States was given an extra shot to qualify for the final of the 4x100 after the team successfully protested that Allyson Felix had been bumped just ahead of a botched handover. The IAAF said the U.S. team would be allowed to run on their own in the evening session at 8 p.m. and try to qualify on time.
This olympics can only be successful for the Netherlands if they win the final women hockey against GB, win the semi-final women volleyball against China, win the semi-final women handball against France and Martina grabbing a medal in the 200m.
10 Gold (20 Total) Medals should always be the goal.

We should definitely win the gold in hockey to compensate for the men's failure today (lost the bronze medal match to Germany in shoot-outs). For the volleyball and handball teams, the Olympics would be a success for them if they win a medal even if it's bronze. For Martina it's already great that he made the final ahead of guys like Gatlin and Blake in his heat. This will be his third Olympics final
I think we will get some medals in BMX and we already have a guaranteed bronze medal in boxing since Fontijn qualified for the SF. So 20 medals total would be a realistic goal but for 10 gold we'd need more luck than we've had so far. Beforehand, everyone counted on Schippers, Kromo and Dumoulin to win gold and none of them did. Then you have Van Vleuten and Zonderland who were both favourites for gold but fell. With that in mind it's actually surprising that we managed to get 8 gold medals after all. I hope these results won't paper over the fact that we do need structural improvements esp. in swimming, where we haven't won any medals in the pool for the first time since 1992. Maybe we'll have another chance once Phelps and Ledecky retire

You're doing very well, per capita. A quite respectable 16th thus far:
Those medals per capita lists are always heavily skewed towards small countries. Grenada is #1 because it won one medal and it has a population of 106,825. China would have to win over 10,000 medals to have Grenada's medal to population ratio.
Edit: and as we speak the handball SF ended, lost 23-24 to France dammit

Per capita calculation is stupid here. If at all, medals should be measured against GDP, which represents the financial resources a country has.

Cheer up. You've still got the nicest airport in the world.
Per capita calculation is stupid here. If at all, medals should be measured against GDP, which represents the financial resources a country has.
But that's assuming that all countries invest an equal % of their GDP in sports, which is not the case at all. I read an article yesterday that said the Netherlands only has 1/10th of Australia's budget which is way disproportional to GDP (763 billion vs. 1.22 trillion). Belgians often complain that their sports infrastructure is abysmal even though it's quite a wealthy country. Some countries devote their resources primarily to winter sports or sports that aren't in the Olympics at all. And many athletes from less developed countries make use of the resources of the wealthier countries around them. So just focusing on GDP can be misleading as well.
