Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. We are possibly going to be moving to NC this summer and we're looking for any info we can get. This forum has been a big help so far!

Does anyone know of some good churches to check out?
Bible-based churches.

Also, I heard there is a YMCA somewhere there. Has anyone been to that?

Thanks!

There is a huge church in the Cleveland area, called C3 (Cleveland community church). I think they recently expanded, you can probably find more info about them by googling them.

There is a YMCA, but its not a normal facility. Basically, they run their summer camps and before/after school care from a location like a school or something. I miss the one I was at in Raleigh.

OK all...I have an off topic question if that is OK.
In the last three weeks I have had several people warn me about racism in NC. My family and I are very liberal minded people and live in a very integrated city in NJ so that would be a HUGE issue for me. I cannot raise my children in an area where racial tension is a problem. I am wondering of course if my friends are trying to find a way to talk me out of leaving! OR do many Northerners just have that misguided view of the South? Any thoughts or observations you would be willing to share???

I think that's a pretty antiquated view of the south. The triangle in particular is fairly progressive, some areas moreso than others are considered "liberal" but I don't see racial tension here as an issue at all. It's a highly educated area with people from all over the globe.

Hi Kelly,
We're from NJ too (worked in NYC for too many years) and are also very liberal socially. We figured with all the colleges and universities in this area, it'd be as pretty progressive.

Just remember that every state has idiots....but aside from that we've not seen any "blatant" racisim or seen things we felt we had to explain to our boys as being wrong.

The only time I felt the need to explain something to them was when I made the mistake of taking the kids to a barber (something dh usually does) and he spent the entire time talking to ME about how his soon to be 2nd ex wife is turning her son into a "gayboy". We never went back. Fortunately, it went over my boys' heads but still!

Feel free to PM if you want to delve more into this.
Lauren

Having worked in Philadelphia for 20 years before heading down here about a year ago, I can tell you that from my experience there is noticeably LESS racial tension here than there. I have yet to see anything remotely resembling that kind of ugliness here, whereas it seemed rather more common (unfortunately) there.

I suppose I could be insulated from it in some way, so "your mileage may vary".

I would concur. Moving here from what was suppose to be a very liberal and racially tolerant area. There is probably less tension in the Triangle then in most urban areas with the incumbent issues of crime etc. Remember however there is old Carolina and new Carolina so you might find differences in age groups.

WOW I couldnt have asked for more positive answers. Thank you all so much. It is true that ignorance is everywhere but I was looking for a reflection of the general culture or atmosphere. It makes me even more hopeful about ending up there.
As usual, you all have been most helpful!

So glad I stumbled on this thread. Have spent the entire day researching Smithfield/Clayton/Wake.

We're retired, originally from NJ, moved to MN 2 1/2 yrs ago. I just wish my husband had listened to me years ago and made a move to NC.

We are thinking seriously of listing our home here and making the move. It would bring us within a 7hr trip "home" to our kids and grands (better than the 25hr one now).

I will be back with lots of questions!
