I’ve read some respirators can be modified to serve four patients at once.

Seems to be a bit on the low side. I'm guessing they have a limited supply and have to prioritize and all but damn. Seems a bit rough.

The free market works. Your ideology, which is a failure, is the very definition of stupidity.

No. If it was typhus, you might have to cremate.

What differentiates virus from bacteria is (in part) that virus require a host, while bacteria do not.

Most virus die within a few hours if they don't have a host, but some can survive up to 72 hours and a few a little longer.

There are virus that go dormant if they don't have a host. Typhus is one. That's why most States require burial vaults. You can't put a casket into the ground. You have to put a burial vault in the ground and then put the casket into the burial vault, to keep those virus that go dormant from leaching into the soil.

Oh brother! The government of Italy is to be assigned a trust level below that of Corporate profit motive only U.S. Here's a thought for your consideration; you've arrived at a hospital at the same time as an NBA first string player and there's only one respirator available ….. need I suggest whose going to get it?

Gimme a break with all of the government controlled bumph. At least in Italy it's doctors making those decisions instead of some corporate entity sitting in a cubicle with pictures of his/her pet cat on the wall.

Your country is in far worse shape vis-à-vis beds AND respirators per capita than Italy.

Don't think that won't happen here too. Socialized medicine has nothing to do with it.

A respirator is a face mask like device that filters contaminants out of the air. A ventilator circulates oxygen under pressure into a person's lungs that otherwise can not breath for themselves.

CPAP may seem similar but is very different. There are a number of differences but most simply is probably; CPAP assists a breathing person, a ventilator breaths for some one who cannot.
