So what? Let them express themselves in a story.

The assignment was to write a Facebook status. I've seen far goofier Facebook posts.

In all likelihood, this kid decided to have some fun with the assignment.

Now let's just say a few weeks from now, this kid decides to become the next mass schools shooter. His paper would likely be uncovered during the investigation that would follow. How many would then say it was an early warning of what was to come and blame the school for not taking it seriously.

Schools are a reflection of the students, families and communities they serve.

And we will likely never know all the sides to this story.
How do you ever cross a street? The odds are far, far, far higher that you will get hit by a car than this kid killing someone.

Joking about getting business done with a gun isn't a funny joke. This isn't anything about being a police state, this is about understanding that we have a gun problem in our schools and it isn't good to overlook potential warning signs anymore.

You have taken the story completely out of context just like the school did.

Are you really that scared of a story written about the neighbors dinosaur? You know, that extinct animal that hasn't existed in how many decades?

Why couldn't the school take that opportunity to talk about guns and gun safety?
Why did the teacher have to overreact and miss this opportunity to actually teach something useful instead of teaching a child that he is not allowed to make up a story even though he was told to make up a story.

What other type's of stories will cause you to send the police to a students house over? There goes the creative writing class.
Seeing this wasn't a fictional writing assignment, but it is a fact you guys seem to ignore. I would rather have the schools get involved in something that turns out to be nothing than to have them miss warning signs that turn out to be deadly.

Uh - what's that? It was a fictional writing assignment. Just posted an article by the Post and Courier (our local newspaper here in Chs) that quotes the school as saying it was a creative writing assignment. Psst- creative writing = fiction.

No, I would prefer we catch warning signs that could help prevent school shootings. We don't know this child so it is impossible to say if he was a problem child or not or if this is something that he could potentially do in the future.

It was an assignment writing about oneself in a Facebook post, not a fictional writing assignment based on what the article stated.

Are all Facebook "statuses" non-fiction then?

I've seen one that read "Big Pimpin'".

How does one "big pimp"?

You would have to ask the teacher what the guidelines for the assignment were.
