Susan "Sue" Trinder is a fingersmith (British slang for thief) who lives in the slums of London with a baby farmer (person who looks after unwanted babies) Mrs.Sucksby. When a once rich man, who gambled all his money away, presents them with a scam that has a payout of 40,000 pounds, Sue signs on to swindle rich Maud Lilly. Maud is an orphan who lives with her uncle, but what exactly is going on in the Lilly house? Sue will pose as Maud's maid so that Mr.Rivers (the gentleman) can get close to and eventually marry her.
It's not a blockbuster or action-oriented film. Directed by noted Canadian Philippe Falardeau, and his influence shows. Emphasis is on human emotions and reactions, not on action. The acting was uniformly excellent, at times I forgot the principals were actors and not persons in a documentary. Reese Witherspoon, normally not a favorite, turns in a very decent non-glamorous performance.
Thumbs up from both me & DH. My expectations were high, his were low, and we were both pleased.
Wednesday is my "Femme Fatale" night and between finishing a La Femme Nikita episode, an I Dream of Jeannie episode, and starting an Elvira flick, I think I pretty much fulfilled that.
The Long Riders (1980) on Amazon. Geeeze, has it been over 30 years? Still good, I had forgotten 90% movie.
