Saw "Crown Heights" an indie film based on true story of Colin Warner, immigrant from Trinidad, (Lakeith Stanfield) who was falsely accused and convicted at 18 of murder in 1980 in NYC, railroaded by cops who didn't care about the truth...but also by some people in community who were too afraid to speak out...
Thought it was very good but it is deliberate pacing...runs hour and 40 min but seems longer...
Very realistic location shooting, costuming, set details...but the color is very sepia...very few bright scenes...
I guess that is a deliberate choice on director's part as it relates to the overall depressing state of American Justice,
but it makes you squint at the screen at times to see facial expressions and details...
Nnamid Asomugha is producer and costars as Carl King, Colin's best friend who spends 20 yrs of his life trying to get Colin the Justice he was denied.
This movie is adapted from a segment of "This American Life"...
We saw "Home Again" w/Reese Witherspoon, Candace Bergen, Michael Sheen and some new young actors
Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 35 so we weren't very hopeful but have family and home in FL where Irma was visiting and needed stress relief...
It was better than we anticipated...not great but better than a 35 I think...
Problem was with script more than anything---Candace Bergen should have had expanded role--lot of reason why that could have added some depth and humor...and Bergen is way under-utilized in films anyway...
Focused too much on the 3 young filmmakers who move into Witherspoon's house in LA. She is daughter of John Cassavette-type director and Candace Bergen, who acted in many of his films like Gena Rowland. Witherspoon's story line seems believable--even taking the guys in is not implausible but the love aspect seems more to give Pico Alexander face time... He plays a jerk quite well...
The idea that they have connections to one of the most iconic directors in Hollywood and DON'T make use of that for contacts w/in movie industry (even though they have agents pushing for them) is just not plausible...
Anyone as aggressive and talented would have been using any means possible to further their cause it would seem...
This could have been much more like "As Good as It Gets" with better script and better intentions as to which audience they were going after...Don't know if Witherspoon had her own money behind this (she has production company I think) but it was sort of failed opportunity to show that she can be more than pretty face...the HBO mini series Big Little Lies was strong effort w/female leads....think she forgot that in setting priorities with this.
King Arthur, the Charlie Hunnam version. It sucks.
I never watched Sons of Anarchy which I know has strong following and received good critical reviews because of Charlie Hunnam...I just think he can't act...
We saw that movie he did about the Amazon explorer and he was just like Pinocchio--a wooden boy brought to life...
Take Care starring Leslie Bibb and Thomas Sadoski. WONDERFUL acting and writing!!
It's on Netflix instant. Highly recommended!
Also, To The Bone with Lily Collins and Carrie Preston. It is definitely the most thoughtfully written and acted movie about eating disorders.
