Robin Wright and Naomi Watts play two lifelong friends who are deeply enmeshed in each other's lives. They live in adjacent homes on beachfront property in Australia, and they each have a son, who have grown up together (like brothers) and are also best friends. When the boys are (I think) about 19, the two women become sexually involved with each other's son. They worry about the effect it may have on them and their dynamic, but the middle-aged women think the boys will lose interest soon enough, so it just seems like a bit of a lark: exciting, exhilarating, harmless, mutual. Tom (the son of Wright's character, Roz) is the first to begin to stray back to a more conventional relationship with a girl his own age, Mary, and when they decide to get married Roz calls things off with Ian (the son of Watts' character, Lil). Ian doesn't react well to the termination of the relationship, because he truly loves Roz, but eventually he too marries a woman his own age, Mary's friend Hannah. The two young wives each have a daughter, and they also grow up thick as thieves on the beach. Until one night all is revealed, devastating the two families.
I enjoyed the movie. It's not titillating, necessarily, despite the pseudo-incest. It all develops sort of organically, and it really is the result of the closeness of these women. They almost have a twin-sister vibe -- and even look somewhat alike: similar bodies, height, hair color. Even though the boys are (young) men when the relationships start, I don't think they had the experience to handle what came to be, and maybe the main problem was that for one couple, the fling was more casual than for the other, so they could breeze in and out of it with less concern. The other couple just felt it all more keenly and were more fragile and susceptible to being hurt. Everything was just more fraught for them.
I felt bad for them all at the end. They were short-sighted and foolish, and it cost them. But at the same time, the way the movie ended, it didn't seem like they cared how much and what they had lost. I think that was the most tragic part.
An Inconvenient Truth part 2. Although the movie was kinda boring it did give pause to ponder as we continue to use our atmosphere as a garbage dump like we used to use our rivers as a convenient place to dump all manner of trash and pollution.
Exam (2009). Eight people that seek a high level job with a prestigious firm are locked in a room with a security guard and have 80 minutes to answer one question. The person with the best answer gets the job and anyone trying to leave the room is disqualified. Watched it on Sunday. None of the actors are well known, but it was an excellent story and the acting was very good. Keeps you in suspense the entire length of the movie. I recommend it!
