Welp, I got up at 5:00am and the clocks on my appliances were flashing, so the power went out last night. The wind is still gusting out there and the National Weather Service is showing -11F for Newburyport - that's the coldest I can recall it getting in 20+ years here at the coast. So we are getting our money's worth in Newburyport this morning.

This is invigorating weather! I'm surprised more pipes did not freeze. I saw on the news we have not got this kind of cold in 66 years. tonight it will be a warm 16 degrees. Anyone going for a walk today? Any problems starting the car ? I got to turn my car on.

No pipes frozen here. I had the thermostats set at 70°F in all rooms where the minisplits were running. They definitively struggled a little, but still way more comfortable compared to my electric resistance baseboards.

My neighbor upstairs has all electric baseboards and if my minisplits were struggling a bit, I can't imagine her situation. I am still amazed how they performed.

Oh bummer! Have you been able to defrost them? Heating tape or a heat gun can help. Keeping your faucets open drip/small trickle can keep things from freezing and/or keep the pipes from bursting.

Although I live in the first floor of an 1850 house, fortunately, I don't have any plumbing in an outside wall, which helps a lot with keeping the pipes from freezing.

Here in central CT they say it was bad but coming from MA, this isn't bad. Walked the dog at it 11am and he hates the cold but this didn't bother him. Car started just fine, sun is out, there wasn't any wind during the night.

I remember sometime like very early 1960s? very late 1950s? when it was record breaking cold and there was some horrid temperature in Maine. We were in MA and my dad made us stay inside while he got the car and then drove us to school. Then also, around 1997 it was in the single digits every day when I'd get up for work. This coming week looks great!

No issues thankfully here NW of Boston. For me the notable things about this cold snap--that it got so cold without a snowpack. Easily would have been -15 to -20 F if we'd had snow on the ground. Plus -10 F recorded at Logan...rare to go below 0 F on the harbor!
