Wow, good luck. I heard that some places were doing this...rather than letting doses go to waste.

I have a feeling it’s a lot more common than we might think. When I went in for my first round (last Friday, Moderna), they asked if I “brought anyone with me.” When I asked why (thinking the were worried about side effects/ a ride home if I was unable), they said that they like having backups in case there’s a little extra. I wish I had known ahead of time.

Moderna is just super-impressive. They're a small company, and this Covid-19 vaccine is their very first commercial product. Pfizer, which is giant, and has been around for over 100 years, had "their" (developed by BioNTech) vaccine approved by the FDA 2 weeks earlier. Yet, Moderna is actually outpacing Pfizer for manufacturing and delivering product! I am not surprised to see small new companies outperform the bigger, older companies on innovation, but to do that on manufacturing and distribution, I am stunned.

I know of several people who've gotten the vaccine this way. Right place, right time.

I'd rather they put it in someone's arm, than in the trash.

I think that's the general sentiment in places that are doing this. It's definitely important to prioritize the most high-risk groups, but there's still a ton of value in boosting the total number of people vaccinated.

My SO should be in Phase 2, subgroup #2. Maybe I should tag along when she gets her shot?

There's a lot behind the scenes that is adding up to the increases. The bottleneck is filling the vials.
Moderna doesn't manufacture the vaccine - it subcontracts the entire process - and they have gobbled up much of the limited capacity that can fill vials. Moderna has also asked for approval to ship 15 doses in the current vials that contain 10. That is accounting for some of their increased capacity. Pfizer just received approval to count the sixth dose that has been found in their existing vials so their increase is smaller. Pfizer did just sign an "finish and fill" agreement with Novartis for their European plant.

Yes, I posted on the Moderna volume increase a couple of days ago. And I didn't imagine they could actually build the production facility in a month while doing the rest - I *still* think it's very impressive. It's a different area, but in my experience with enterprise software, even when you use service providers there is still a lot of work, a lot of complexity and a lot can go wrong, the contracting company still owns the project and is the one responsible for its success or failure.

Someone I know who is a nurse received his 2nd dose the other day, he did fine with the first one. He received second dose in the morning and felt perfect all day. That night he had achy bones (particularly knees and lower back). Progressed to full body aches similar to a bad flu, however no sore throat. Fell asleep but woke up soon after with a low grade temp. (felt achy all over, freezing, followed by sweaty and hot). at 2am he felt awful so took more tylenol and 600mg of ibuprophen Tossed and turned a while with aches and mild chills. Next day felt perfectly normal.

This is what most of the nurses on hand (all of whom had received their 2nd dose already) when I received my first shot said to expect after the 2nd dose. I had a pretty sore arm overnight and part of the day after I got the shot as well as mild fatigue the following day. All of that is pretty normal apparently. But I'm just operating under the assumption I'm going to feel fairly sick for 24-36 hours after round 2. Based on the anecdotes from those I have spoken to about it, these types of symptoms are more common than not. They also said a pain reliever should help and it should clear up pretty quickly.
