But whatever it is, it should prove to be interesting.

You could be right. Maybe someone kept up maintenance on it for a time? Could be that it might have been used as a storage building of some sort after serving it's original purpose. Hard to say for sure, but it definitely has piqued my curiosity! As I had made mention before, I had driven by the site too many times to count without ever knowing of it's existence.

Where was this located?
Was it in the Susquehanna area, and became Richard's U.S. later?

Perhaps your remnants were some of the original McCune Home buildings. There is some architectural similarity.

Another interesting tidbit about McCune...

Christian Yetter was born in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1847. In 1866, Yetter
immigrated to America, settling first in Hermann, Missouri. In 1870, he moved
to Kansas City where he worked as a carpenter for the firm of Hook and Rollard
for one year. The following year, he moved to Independence, where he assisted
in demolishing the old courthouse. In 1874, Yetter married Katharine Helmig,
who was also born in Germany and whose family came to America when she was
six. In 1876, Yetter began his own contracting business. According to the
Independence Examiner, Yetter was "for many years . . . the leading building
contractor in Independence." ' In 1902, he was elected building inspector.
In 1916, Yetter entered into a partnership with Robert L. McBride, the son of
an early Independence contractor. Yetter and the firm of Yetter and McBride
were responsible for the construction of a number of buildings in Independence
and the surrounding areas, including the Ott and Rock Creek district school
houses, the Independence Library, the Independence City Hall, Columbian
School, the Masonic building, the McCune Home for Boys and McCune school, the
Jackson County Girls Home, and a number of private residences, including the Hughes Home at 801 S. Main.

Yes, that was it. It was C&J United Super #2 at the time it opened.

I hate to bear bad news, but that building isn't vacant anymore. It is gone, removed, and replaced by a new CVS Pharmacy.

Another C&J United Super was at Noland and 35th at the Gaslight Square shopping center. it opened around '65 or '66? It later became Jerry's United Super. I never worked there but was in there a few times. That Gaslight Square was a big thing when it opened. I think all of the stores are now empty.

Another C&J was on Chrysler. I have not been by there in a long time but the grocery went out a long time ago. Another was on Woods Chapel Road. That building was recently vacate but I cannon pinpoint exactly where it is at. I was never in there.

The original C&J was at 23rd and Kiger (Lee's Summit Road at the time). I started working there at age 13 and was there around six years or so. It was replaced by a Walgreens.

That's very possible that it was an original home building.

Oh, and bless your feeble memory!

C & J stood for Clarence and Jerry.
