Streetview and Aerial View shows what appears to be concrete remnants plus the telephone pole/streetlight to the right. Hard to imagine a lodging establishment at that location, with all the grass behind it.

A&W had a 3 digit E. US 24 address. It's hard to tell but it looks like 4 digits in the photo. Also, would A&W have sold Coca-Cola, per the menu signage to the right?

If this is the location, it would have been A&W 55-60 years ago and that is what I remember, but some one could have located another drive in there when A&W went out. This photo is of a drive in that is obviously closed and if it is the old A&W there is a used car lot there today.

I think you could go inside at this A&W and I thought there were living quarters upstairs but the area above does not look large enough for a living area. I also dont remember the brick wainscoat.

It also seems to me that if this is the former A&W you could drive further back for parking on each side. This photo has a wood fence on both sides cutting the drive off.

Yes, it was on the northwest corner of Noland and 40 Hiway, across Noland from K-Mart. That's also where the Holiday Inn was, before it became Cottage Inn.

It wasn't a lodging establishment per se, it was a gas station and cafe type of business.

Yup, that's it. Been many times to the K-Mart and always remembered the motel as Holiday Inn until you mentioned it.

That Holiday Inn was $5 per night when it opened.

The Cottage Inn on Highway 24 was also a gas station and cafe, and did not have a place to stay.
