The baseball facility is in McCoy Park, on the south side of 24 hwy across from the Truman Library. It also has been there for several years now, and includes tennis courts, horseshoe playing areas, a softball field and other amenities.

Having only a general direction where this is, I took a look at Maps. What's this baseball structure I see nearby at Mill and Spring? When did this happen? A WCHS (boo!) home field?

Lastly, I realize how little I knew direction-wise as a youth. To me, the walk from 24 Hiway SC to The Square was a long one. Now I see just a few blocks north, one is within a couple of blocks from the Library. I wonder if I ever walked that direction instead? Maybe with my buddy who lived on Cottage, he knew his way around but it seemed like we always went the River/Maple route.

The ball field is in McCoy Park, and is relatively new (compared to us!). When I was growing up that area was closed off and abandoned, so of course we played there a lot!

Per The Golden Year 1963 Polk's BINGO you are correct, Sir

A&P on the corner, then 3 in a row gas stations Skelly, Texaco and Tenneco

On the Osage corner was SMAKS drive in restaurant

Who remembers these? I recall NONE

I remember that area quite well, as Spring and Osage between Truman & US 24 was my paper route.

It is curious about the windows being bricked up in front. That front part would also seem to be, maybe, the original school, with the taller section in back being added later.

I went to De Kalb first thru fourth grade from 1952-56, and bussed, the only time I ever rode the bus to school, to fifth grade at Noland school in Independence. Moved to KC and went to Askew School for 6th and 7th grade and graduated from East High School 8th thru 12th. The school was in its configuration shown in the picture when I went there. De Kalb had 2 classrooms in front and 2 classrooms on top of the rear section. The bottom of the rear section was the cafeteria that included a performance stage. I would like more info to include, more picutures, when it was built, converted to Special Ed, and when it was torn down.

Your question was almost timely. Today it is announced that The Examiner and other locals are being sold by Gannett to CherryRoad Media.

Welcome to Old Independence Nannaphil! We hope you'll stick around and share more memories and ask more questions. However, our resident expert on DeKalb has passed on, and I know very little about it. Perhaps a few of our "elders" can provide some info. Stay tuned...
