So when you say waaaaay back when, just how far waaaaay back do you mean? 60s? 50s?

I might be able to look it up if you can narrow your time window a bit

And by the way where were the fairgrounds? Was it County or city fairgrounds?

My wife went to South Secondary and graduated from Truman in 1969. It's a small world.

The Fair Grounds were a city facility. They were south of Noland Road and east of 23rd (Alton) app. 4+ blocks. On old maps, the street leading to them is 'Forest'. Later maps show it as 'Fair'. I'm having trouble narrowing down the dates. Pre 1900's show Forest, 1960's show Fair. Not very narrow!

Clear as mud, right?

YES! Thanks for that 6 decades window!

So were the Fairgrounds around when we were kids? I don't seem to remember being there (my Grandparents would have taken me)

My Grandparents lived on Fair and there was no sign of the grounds then; I think they were long gone. I am trying to nail down the streetcar line that ran out to them, and all that was long gone.
I have finally nailed down the who when and where of the car line, which had the sole purpose of transport to the fair grounds. I just got curious about the street name change.

I think YOU were a kid LONG before me.......

Uh, no. You are OLDER than me.

In 1924 the Fairgrounds were listed at "Fair Association" 7 Hill & Martin Bldge grounds @ Alton betw Hocker and Logan

Forest was Forest, as we know it. N and S N all up to 731 where M Tupper Smith resides
And S to 823, then to C & A Tracks
And to 23rd with three individual listings

So lotsa farmland

BTW just saw this. I wish the article was online

"The Independence Fair Association was organized in 1906. The fairgrounds were sold and broken up into a real estate subdivision. The last such fair was in 1924."

So we can infer that the east west "Forest" was renamed to "Fair" some time (likely shortly after) around 1906 which coincidentally was the Polk's year cited above, and the first year that Polk's is available for me. There are 1911 and 1912 versions but those are incomplete, missing the streets section.

There really was nothing else I could see on Google search. No images either. Maybe with the above info, you can try some different key words and narrow things down even further.
