Correction...“coming soon” sometimes means maybe never or not in your lifetime.

It definitely does especially when it comes to ALDONT and this area.

Lewters Hardware site most likely includes a new restaurant and current owner Mac Lewter said Friday, “I fully expect an 8-10 story complex.”

Mac Lewter confirmed Friday that the family has “a contract” to sell the property to buyers from New Orleans. Lewter declined to name the buyers or the sales price but said no local investor would meet the New Orleans offer.

The store is located on Washington Street near Interstate 565 and close to the downtown interstate exit. The sale will also include property across the street that formerly housed part of the family business. That will become parking, Lewter said.

The linked article said Tommy Battle was OK with buildings up to 17 stories. Should be unlimited as far as the city is concerned.

I wonder how many Westerners feel as I do. I'm with Tommy Battle on this one. I think 17 stories is high enough. I don't want to see Huntsville turn into a city of skyscrapers. Especially if only a few ruin the existing skyscape. Why does Huntsville need huge buildings? Is more traffic and congestion something desirable? Believe me, it is not.

I think that may mean in the area close to the historic residential areas. There are no limits otherwise.

Ugh. At least they are restricted from the historical residential area.

I read this as Battle has endorsed projects that were up to 17 stories before, not that 17 stories is his limit. He helped update the height limits as soon as he took office. If he wanted 17 stories and under that would have been in the policy.

Meanwhile around the corner from the Lewter's site will be a new seafood restaurant Catch 22.

The business is located in the old Huntsville Times building at 220 Holmes Ave. N.E., the former location of Below the Radar.

Unfortunately I see the future of Huntsville having traffic problems. It's growing at too fast of a pace not to, while our road construction cannot/will not keep up.

My thoughts are we need another east-west expressway for relief from 431 to I-65 somewhere north. Also another North-South expressway somewhere between Wall Triana and Greenbrier Road. This for the future, because when the population of this area starts creeping upwards of 600k and 700k then you are going to see serious traffic backups on the current roads. University/72 already needs relief, and a single traffic accident (no matter the side of the road) will slow down all of I565.

I think all communities will have to push this forward as a team with alternative road building plans (likely tolls). I don't see ALDOT voluntarily coming up with a plan to keep this areas road construction ahead of needs. We'll be waiting around 50 years before they decide to do something like that and we don't have that time now. In Montgomery they do not live in our reality of being a high growth area, so it's probably not something they can comprehend.
