I think the decision makers will rue the day they decided to do a signal-controlled intersection rather than a proper interchange where the northern half-ass and the Parkway intersect.

Remember at one time the intersection of Bradford and Rideout Rd (now called Research Park Blvd) was going to be signal-controlled. Thank goodness they saw how bad the decision was and went ahead with an overpass and somewhat of an interchange. And some may remember all the opposition to building 565 at all back in the 70s.

I vote that "Northern Half-Ass" be the official, permanent name.

If not enough money can be raised for restoration of the Saturn 1B would anyone object to a replica instead? It should be much less than the Saturn V replica at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Great point. Thought it had been mentioned earlier but again, very practical and fiscally sound, if cost savings.

The "Useless Overpass" nickname has survived the test of time, so hopefully, the "Northern Half-ass" will spread and stick around.

I was in that area earlier this afternoon, and as far as I could tell, nothing is being done around the Parkway/Bob Wade Lane intersection. Just to the south, in the southwest quadrant, some property has a "For Sale" sign on it. The Northern Half Ass is progressing very, very slowly if at all.

Good news for the much loved and picturesque Jones Valley in Huntsville. To have something like this in the middle of the city is unique and special.

https://www.al.com/news/2023/05/what...s-changes.html

First things first: The Jones family said there are no plans to sell any land in Jones Valley — the revered farmland in east Huntsville — and no plans for new development.

If you’ve seen or heard anything different, it’s not true.

“I just didn’t want the wrong message to get out there,” Raymond Jones Jr. said in an interview Tuesday with AL.com while noting there has been some misinformation about the farm on social media. “People are going to think what they’re going to think. But if there was a way to put the right message out there about what’s actually happening, not someone speculating, it makes the world simpler for everybody.”

"Changes, however, are coming in Jones Valley. The Jones family along with the Lowe and Blue families of Huntsville outlined those plans in a statement Monday.

The first is that the family is stepping back from cattle farming — a decision made more than a year ago “as a result of negative financial pressures and labor shortages.” Instead, the family will focus on crop farming with corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat in the coming years. They removed some fencing around the farm because it is no longer needed.

The second change is that construction is expected to begin as soon as this week on three bridges on the north side of Carl T. Jones Drive across from the Target-anchored shopping center. The statement said the family received the permit for the bridges more than four years ago."

Jones said about 1,800 acres of the 2,400-acre farm remains undeveloped.

Two comments:
1. Jones says, "the family is stepping back from cattle farming. "Instead, the family will focus on crop farming with corn, soybeans, cotton and wheat in the coming years." While this land will not be developed for housing or commercial usage, the land will not be the pretty green pastures for cattle grazing, but will look completely different with crops growing on it. In fact, there will be times of the year after the crops are harvested in the fall (in the case of cotton) when the land will look pretty baren. Although you can't blame the Jones family for seeking a higher return on the large parcel of land they own (and pay taxes on).
2. The fact that they are building the bridges on the north side of Carl T. Jones indicates that plans are in the works for some type of development on some portion of the land in the southern portion of their farm. Why would you spend money building the bridges if you weren't going to do something? One factor that may be keeping a lid on development is that several of the family members have their homes on this property, located at the edge of the woods and I doubt that they want to look out at a bunch of apartments.

Speaking of apartments, the homeowners in the Lendon development are pretty upset that they will be looking at apartments in the backyards of their expensive homes (in some cases million-dollar homes). This land is on the Jones farm immediately east of Garth Rd. at the southern end.

For cotton, they missed the upswing. Timing wasn’t their thing. https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activi...ities/tt%3anmx

Just about everybody has apartments in their backyards in this area nowadays.
