In a normal city when there is a backup, traffic can be diverted to an alternate route. The problem is that Huntsville doesn't have many of these alternate routes so a traffic camera couldn't help much with that problem.
there are 10 cameras planned along with the message boards. The fiber system being installed will allow more added as needed.

When the project was first announced in August 2021, it was scheduled to be complete by the end of 2023. Now it's delayed another year.

ALDOT had a "wild guess" of 10 message boards in late 2021; now that's down to 3 - pretty significant cut, but the cost in 2021 and the present listed cost is about the same. The original announcement didn't say how many cameras, but I suspect it was well over the 10 that will now be installed. https://www.al.com/news/2021/08/i-56...ge-boards.html

The camera network is pretty extensive in the other 3 major cities plus Tuscaloosa, and has been for quite some time (about 20 years in B'ham, and about the same time for message boards, around 2014 in Montgomery).

Here's a link to cameras across the state, with between 100 and 150 each in the B'ham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa areas, and a few in Florence and Decatur under the Huntsville title (probably ALDOT districts). Madison County presently has zero. https://algotraffic.com/Cameras#

Looks like none of the cameras in any district are working this afternoon.

WAFF has some very nice high res, but also very limited in number, "weather" cameras that usually show traffic, in three Huntsville locations. They've outdone ALDOT for quite some time.

I thought the question was about accidents and traffic? Cameras won't help with this unless people are paid to watch them and respond accordingly. Does anybody know if there is a budget for this?

The sensors detect traffic flow and THEN a human in the loop looks at cameras. It’s not like watching security cameras at Walmart for shoplifting.

There's this: https://www.wbrc.com/story/36405245/...-west-alabama/ so yes, people are watching and controlling the cameras.

And this - not sure what they do:https://www.uah.edu/eng/departments/...agement-center

Mill Creek transformation coming, this also ties into the Sky Bridge, linear park downtown.

The city of Huntsville and the Huntsville Housing Authority are finalizing the master plan for the $400 million Mill Creek transformation.
The project will be done in phases to revitalize the 28 acre neighborhood. Housing authority units on site have already been demolished.
City planners have been working with Urban Design Associates for the last 7 months to finalize the plan.
Shane Davis, the city’s director of urban and economic development, said the master plan may be unveiled publicly later this month. The project – called the Choice Neighborhood Initiative – will be funded by a mixture of federal grant money, local government funds and private investment.

The unveiling later this month will include artist renderings, will reveal how the project will be implemented and what it will contain.
Davis said "its not all multifamily, there will be brownstones, townhomes and market rate townhomes.
a grocery store for the are is expected to be announced in a couple weeks.

The northbound lanes of Monroe Street between Williams and Clinton will be closed for about 3 months beginning Monday, April 24. The closing is to allow room for construction of the Autograph Marriott hotel across from the VBC.

If it appears that new apartments are being built everywhere, that's because they are. Apartment construction is surging in Huntsville (not sure if it's just Huntsville city or the metro. Madison has quite a few under construction as well).

14,685 units are currently under construction in 62 apartment complexes.
9,479 units are in planning in 30 additional apartment communities.
Total of 24,164 either under construction or planned.
>7,500 units have broke ground in the last 4-5 months.
About 6,000 certificates of occupancy will be issued in 2023, and another 8,000-9,000 will 2024.
