No, it was not. Ridout Dr. was exactly like it is now, just a two-lane road with houses on it. Ridout Rd. (that we now call AL255) which opened in 1969 abruptly ended at U.S. 72. There were concrete barriers and traffic was forced to exit either ti 72 east or 72 west. When the state decided to extend Ridout in the 1990's, the state bought land for the right of way which was directly west of the homes on Ridout Dr.

However, the plans for the extension from N. Parkway have been scaled back to only go as far east as the Shields Rd. (a long distance from Gurley), so for now it seems that there will never be a true Eastern Bypass - There is a large grass median between the east and west bound lanes similar to what you see on AL255 north of AL 53 - This was for the future controlled access main lanes which for now look like they will never be built.

That's a real shame.

Maps from 1948 to 1964 show Rideout Rd. initially turned right and paralleled the Southern Rail Line into Town.

Any word lately on the Space Command relocation to Redstone? As I recall, a General at a convention being held here recently was asked the question and he implied it as a matter of weeks.

Good news for Oak Place antebellum mansion, near downtown will remain intact and become an “event center” for weddings and gatherings, the buyer’s building contractor confirms.
George Steele, early Huntsville’s best-known architect, designed and built Oak Place in 1840 as his “country residence,” according to its state historic marker.

Steele also designed the Greek Revival style First National Bank that sits above the Big Spring.
Oak Place is on the National Historic Register and “unique for the period with its split-level style.

Site work has begun for the Autograph hotel downtown, across from the VBC and adjacent to the new parking garage and Big Spring Park. Nice rendering here..the room count went up so it looks like two floors were added.

lots of choices in a dense area of Huntsville, Main Event, Stars and Strikes, Dave and Busters, Altitude, High Point Climbing and Fitness, and the Orion Amphitheater, Touchstar Cinemas under construction. Need to link them all together with a bike/greenway if possible.
