That didn't come from the south. It was a different low that came from the west. .
It's ocean enhanced. No low came from the west. Not sure where you got that info from. The snow that's been falling there is purely from the ocean and you can see it on the radar loop. You might be thinking about the low that's still in Ohio Valley? Still not the reason for their snow.

In fact NWS Boston says so.

MAIN ACTION HAS BEEN MESOSCALE BANDS LIFTING NORTH FROM THE OCEAN AND AFFECTING MOSTLY EASTERN MA WITH OCEAN ENHANCEMENT ACROSS NE MA.

And snow ratios are more than just nuts, they are insane. Less than 1/10th liquid falling and areas with 4-8" already. Mountain type snow.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 foot totals now.

huh? I thought there energy coming from the west. What caused the snow from chicago to western ma? Yes there's clearly ocean enhancement.

Just took a pic outside my house in West Hartford. Snow seems to have picked up in the past hour with about 0.5 mile visibility (guesstimating around 2" total). Again, I don't see any of this on the Upton radar!

roads were bad on the way home from E Hftd about 12:15 and still were about 2:30 in Mtown even with the fact that there was only about an inch of snow (if that) on the ground. so cold, everything is sticking.

I added a sentence right after I posted that thinking what you might of been thinking. lol

Yes, the "flow" of energy is moving Northeast but there's no Low and the moisture they are getting is going against the flow. That's what makes this fascinating to see. In other words their snow has been coming from the SouthEast all day while everyone else North and West of them is getting it from the West.

Thanks. Radar beam just not picking it up but stations are reporting it. Ground troops so important. Thanks

That snow is still coming here. If you look on a map there's a LOT of snow to the west in PA and upstate NY. The idea is it will phase with a coastal storm currently in the Carolinas to produce a "blizzard".

What Boston area is getting is basically an ocean version of the "lake effect" that produces lots of snow and snowfalls in Syracuse, Buffalo, Cleveland, etc. It's not as common here because:

A) Salt water freezes at lower temperatures and we tend to average warmer winter temperatures than the Great Lakes to begin with.

B) "Lake effect" works best on west facing shores. That's why Toronto, Cleveland and Chicago get less snow than Buffalo and Syracuse even though they are all on or near the lakes.

The place that most commonly gets "ocean effect" snow is Cape Cod followed by easternmost Long Island, but it's been seen as far south as NJ and as far north as Maine and Nova Scotia.

By the way, totally unrelated, but (Cambium, who has family in nearby New Rochelle will find this interesting), Pelham, one of the few Westchester districts that did not purposely have winter break run to Jan. 6, was one of the few in the tri-state area that was open all day and did not have an early dismissal.

Crunch time. Front edge approaching. Those of you who have been getting snow all day it might be over 24hrs total worth for you.

Updated Radar and Wind Chill values. Some crazy real feel numbers out there.

Cam, what do you think Northwest CT will see for totals in the end (I keep seeing 5-10 inches predicted for the entire state on the tv stations)? When do you expect to have the snow stop finally tomorrow? Do you think we will have problems even after the snow stops with wind blowing everything around?

Hartford employers, including the State, had staggered early releases this afternoon. Roads weren't great in Hartford and East Hartford but became clear/just wet heading into Glastonbury, Marlborough, etc. where there's maybe an inch of snow. A few miles are making a big difference so far!
