With all the hype, spin, bias, bad information, marketing…etc…most of us couldn’t even tell a traveler what is “normal” for our area any time of year -lol.

You are at 40 latitude…you live on the oceanic margins of a landmass…facing a subtropical ocean to the south. What are you expecting in October and November – heavy snow, 30 F highs, constant overcast weather and precipitation, frequent storms…etc?

The fact that there has been some snow a FEW times in November (and even late October) has been distorted to make many of us think there is a real chance of snow in fall EVERY YEAR. This is totally misleading of course: Snow is RARE in October/November… average daily highs are in the mid 50’s F, and several days even in November will see highs of 60 F. In terms of sunshine and dry weather -we are not a high latitude location like the PNW, Northern Europe, Russia, Northern Asia…etc) where Oct/Nov bring much overcast and cyclonic weather. I agree, it has been overly sunny and dry – but frequent sunshine is a fact of life for anyone who lives from around 40 latitude southward. In fact, there are some climates that are classified as “subtropical” that start around 38 – 40 latitude.

My point is that that the true nature and genetics of any climate often win out over the extremes. You are seeing that now – despite the extremes we see now and then (and how they are sooooo hyped)… the “typical “ weather in the Tri-State region in October and November frequently wins out – meaning it’s often mild, sunny, stable, and dry.

…and one other FYI (that again shows how nothing is what it seems)….Cactus are NATIVE to the sand dunes of the whole East Coast from Rhode Island to Key West and into the West Indies:

Prickly-pear (Opuntia humifusa)

Cactus actually FLOWER in the CT/NY/NJ/DE area....these are from Milford, CT

I AGREE!!! The average temp is still well in the 50's here. Fall is usually the driest time of year. We get winter in WINTER.

Actually I think something you said in another post is more in line. This weather now may be lined up perfectly for a snowy , cold winter. The worm WILL turn ...it always does. If you are a winter lover, you want the cold air spilling in December, not now. In fact I think this winter is gonna be a colder and wetter than normal.

I think that most people like a good snow now and then. Normally it only happens a few happens a few months out of the year. Which is why it is so disappointing some years when you a get miserable cold rain again and again instead of snow.

Wavehunter - besides the cactus that grows in Connecticut, there is also the Monk Parakeet.

Monk Parakeets - Damned Connecticut

And I wasn't talking about snow for us...yet. But the threats of storms are increasing per what I'm seeing now. Just give it time. (don't watch the boiling pot )

Last winter was awesome. I could have done without the 50s rain storm in January, though.

One other note: For what they are worth…they updated the 8 to 14 day outlook….it seems to show temps above normal in much of the USA (including the East Coast from Florida to Rhode Island). This seems to be following NWS/NOAA prediction of November 2013 following October 2013 in being dry and rather mild for much of the month:

Temps look to be going SLIGHTLY below normal from Friday through mid week next week after our 2 day warmup. Score another win (sic) for the NWS long term forecast.....

Everyone should really enjoy this "mini warm up".

I'll make this simple.. Look at the 2nd column (2M TMP). That's the temperature based on the latest GFS. Double digits = over 50. 10 Celsius = 50 degrees. Not many days over that 10 mark.

So after this warm up lets call this many seasonable days/nights with many below normal temps.

This can all change especially after next week but the consensus is for the Jet stream to favor a cooler pattern for us now.

Like I said.... the water is in the pot... question is what temperature is the knob turned at?
