Even assuming that Philly ends 2020 with a higher murder rate than Chicago, and that there is therefore doubt whether Chicago is in fact the most violent major city in America, we can still say that without a doubt Chicago is*either*the first or second most violent major city in America. In other words, "hey at least we're not Philadelphia" is just not going to be something you'll see the chamber of commerce use in their marketing strategy.

Chicago has a serious and mostly unparalleled problem. That isn't a media conspiracy. It's real. The numerous families grieving over their dead kids in Chicago right now should make that clear enough. Chicago has a problem. Whether NYC had a bad weekend or Philly has had a bad year doesn't in any way change the reality that Chicago is the most or at least one of the most dangerous major cities in the US.
With a population of 2,693,976, Chicago has recorded 354 murders.
With a combined population of 1,284,210, Baltimore, STL, and N.O. have recorded 380 murders.

Any questions?

Baltimore, STL and NO is not a major city. It's 3 major cities in 3 different regions of the US. Chicago is still the most violent major city in America.

And actually Chicago is at 369 homicides so far this year plus 1,876 shooting victims.

Yeah but Chicago's a big city. It has its good and bad sides, its the news that makes the city itself look bad. At least they don't have a murder rate as high as New Orleans or Detroit

Yeah, just one. Why on earth do you think that comparing Chicago to Baltimore is supposed to make Chicago seem less dangerous dangerous than it really is? "Chicago: at least it's not Baltimore."

No, actually, it is 700 or more murders and thousands of sjootings a year, including an absurd and ghoulish number of small kids, that makes the city look bad. That's not "the news." That is Chicago, which is in the news because it can't stop making the news.

Exactly. Chicago crime apologists say "oh Chicago's only the 9th most dangerous city in America" like OK lol and New York and LA are probably in the hundreds. If there's only 8 cities in America that are more dangerous, then Chicago is royally messed up and easily the most dangerous US city over 500,000 people and there's like 30 US cities over 500,000.

Philly is at 215 homicides so far and just over 900 shooting victims. Does this mean you're actually more likely to die in Philly from being shot than Chicago? Cause to me it seems like from what I see on CBS Chicago and WGN, that the majority of people shot in Chicago die. Now I obviously know this is far from true, it just seems like on CBS Philly, there's tons and tons of nonfatal shootings but not a lot of homicides. Even from insane injuries like a 15 year old being shot 17 times recently and surviving.

Factors like average distances to hospitals and methods of transportation to a hospital definitely play some part in which shootings turn into homicides.

You got a point, but we always cant trust the media, it always stretches the whole saying
'It's the most violent dangerous city of America', making people think the whole city gets down when its mostly just on the south and west side. It's crazy though how all much shootings and murders are concentrated onto them sides. Its like a warzone.Just my take on the situation.

I agree. Same with NYC. Small percent of shootings actually lead to homicides. Chicago aims for the head...or just has better shooters.

Actually according to compstat, NYC has 717 shooting victims this year through July 5th, with 197 homicides.

This doesn't take into account homicides from stabbings or other types of assaults though. It would be interesting to see what the percentage of shootings leading to homicides are in various cities.
