Middle class folks are streaming out of Queens down to Atlanta, North Carolina, and Northern VA like mad and have been for a few decades now.
With that said, I believe that 5 of the 10 blackest zip codes in NY State are in that area and I believe the black median household income in those 5 continuous zip codes is about 10-11k higher than the metro median household income according to relatively recent information. I believe that some are moving to suburbs in Nassau and Suffolk counties too. Here's an earlier post in this thread: https://www.city-data.com/forum/41511816-post1262.html

I definitely wasn't talking about a "mecca" or "utopia", as you aren't going to find that in this realm and I don't get into that. I was referring to a concentration of a predominately black middle class area. Check out the info in the post above.

Keep in mind, if we're going to be brutally honest, the black median household income in DeKalb County GA is below the state figure according to the most recent info available: Dekalb County, GA Income and Careers - USA.com™

Georgia QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

So, it isn't necessarily uniform within the whole county, but portions/chunks are relatively solidly middle class and predominately Black.

If this is the case, then why is DeKalb County praised so much?

Yeah, that whole area around Jamaica, Cambria Heights, and St. Albans has a solid middle class working stiff population. The types that get every morning at 6 to take the LIRR to the City type of folks. What's been happening though is that group has seen a lot of drain over the years and have been replaced mainly by Jamaican and Dominican immigrants while their children head South (or themselves) for better working opportunities.

My family is from that area and the difference between how it is now and how it used to be back in the 70s and even the 80s is stark.

Yep. Say the same thing. While DeSoto is nice, as well as Lancaster. The best one is Cedar Hill.

I'm not sure if people know this but West Indians often have larger households for cultural reasons. And indeed, average household sizes in SE Queens tend to be a bit larger than they are in PG and Dekalb County. Here are some of the majority-Black zip codes we listed earlier ordered by median earnings. In parentheses is the % of people working full-time earning $100K or more per year.

20721: $89,187 (33.7%)
20769: $78,506 (30.3%)
20607: $78,291 (23.9%)
30214: $58,893 (12.8%)
11412: $51,001 (6.2%)
11413: $54,298 (8.4%)
11429: $51,820 (7.5%)
11433: $44,807 (5.5%)
11434: $49,160 (5.8%)

And no, I'm not hating on Atlanta. People on here compare black places to DeKalb County all the time like it's the benchmark, but the county's income is below the state's level

So, is it a matter of that area having a more diverse Black population? I forgot I revised that post later: https://www.city-data.com/forum/41515536-post1264.html

Is it median or average income? I'm only asking because you mentioned both.
