Verizon 4G LTE smartphones are incompatible with AT&T 4G LTE network
"Verizon spokeswomen confirmed that their 4G/LTE phones will not work on AT&T’s 4G/LTE network, as “the phones will be on different frequencies.” And she’s right: Verizon’s LTE network operates in the upper half of the 700 Mhz range (746-787 Mhz), while AT&T’s operates on the lower half (704-746)."
"Verizon uses LTE for data, falling back to CDMA for voice. AT&T uses LTE for data as well, but falls back to GSM for voice instead."
so how is AT&T in the NY/New England area? good, spotty, horrible..
I have heard of MetroPCS which is supposed to be nation-wide too, and they are cheap and no contract.
Don't know how their coverage is though.
Is there a way to find out?
which phones do you think are best if you go with AT&T and like to take photos, videos, and get on the web?
Don't necessarily need a smart phone and cannot afford one, but want a good phone which will do what I need.
There's one called the Panther, or something similar AT&T makes, has a seperate keyboard, and it has a touch tone screen. I liked that model.. sort of expensive though, $129.
Who has AT&T here and which phones do the best for videos, photos & the web? Dont' like the blackberry, their keyboard's too small for my hands.
The average downlink speed was 23.6 Mbit/s and the peak data rate was 61.1 Mbit/s, which "meaningfully exceeded" the expectations of Signals Research. The data rate was higher than 5 Mbit/s for 95 percent of the time.
The average uplink speed was 15.2 Mbit/s with a peak rate of 23.6 Mbit/s, which was "much higher than we anticipated," according to Signals Research. The uplink data rate exceeded 5 Mbit/s 98.2 percent of the time. [Ed note: As a shared medium, wireless networks typically slow down as they get loaded up with customers, so it will be worth checking these speeds again in a year.]
The average latency was 49 milliseconds with a minimum value of 40 milliseconds. According the Signals Research, this was "higher [worse] than we were expecting based on the capabilities of LTE and our experiences with testing networks in Europe."
For the handover between LTE and HSPA+, it took 2.4 seconds for the device to drop the LTE connection and establish a connection on the HSPA+ network, which Signals described as "relatively seamless for a data connection."
Comparing the AT&T 4G to Verizon Communications Inc.'s (VZ) own 4G offerings, they found that AT&T handily won.
AT&T's 3G network already has showed itself to be the nation's fastest data network, being nearly three times faster than Verizon in some tests.
The AT&T 4G network is similarly impressive. *It hit peak download speed of 42.85 Mbps (on the Momentum 4G modem) and an average download speed of 24.65 Mbps, while the Verizon network only mustered a peak of 23.81 Mbps (with the UML290 modem) and an average of*16.70 Mbps. *Uploads showed an even broader gap, with 11.44 Mbps for the AT&T modem versus 4.01 Mbps for the Verizon modem.
In short, AT&T was about 50 percent faster in downloads, and almost three times as fast in uploads.
