I have lived in Albuquerque all of my life, it's a wonderful place to live, yes we do have bad areas of town but so does every other city in the USA, we also have very nice rich and poor areas of town, we don't even have to lock our doors where I live. We also have a neighbor who moved here from Boston who did so to get her kids away from the gang life etc, she feels like shes in paradise here compared to where she lived before. Yes we have gang bangers in certain areas of town, but again, who doesn't? Yes it has changed due to all the gangs that have moved here from California and other states and rude people who don't know how to drive who have moved here from other states, statistics are made per capita, I can guarantee our crime is not anywhere near as bad as most big cities, and its only in certain areas of town just like anywhere else. Don't always believe what you read. Personally, I lived in California in the bay area for a while, and had the tme of my life I might add, but chose to move back home when it was time to raise kids, there was no way I was raising my kids in California, the kids were way to advanced for my taste, our kids here in Albuquerque grow up faster than they use to, but not anywhere near as fast as California and Oregon which by the way, has the highest rate of runaway homeless teens on drugs in the USA, again, maybe that's not true...I don't live there, funny how a few people and the media can steer someones opinion so strongly. I would love for Albuquerque to be the way it use to be, but it has grown very rapidly in the last 15 or so years, so if you find it bad or rude remember it's not the New Mexicans, it's people who have moved here from other states or "countries" I must add. It's pretty much the same everywhere, and I think deep down, everyone knows that, they just base their opinions on what they hear or read or something that bothered them during a short visit. Or...you may live in a bad area of town, if so move to a nicer area of town, or better yet, move somewhere else that also has bad areas of town and rude people/drivers etc, it's everywhere, it's too crowded here now anyway...

^ Although I think NM is rude at times, I saw the same behavior in Missouri where I used to live. Its everywhere. It's all in how you handle it and your tolerance level.

Pro's

Great culture
Great Food
Balloon Fiesta
Green Chili
Casinos
Mild Four Seasons
Sandia Mountains
Friendly Atmosphere
Growing / Improving City
Rio Grande
Tri-culture

Con's

No lakes
No Greenery ( green scenary)
Lack of Water (supposibly)
Gangs
Not a major hub for big companies
Downtown could be improved
No pro sports
people dont want change to improve the city / make it more progressive ( too stuck in their ways)
Not enough entertainment, can get boring, especially for younger crowds.

Additional: City has a lot of potential, can be a lot better years to come if they work on it.

ps you all suck at driving too.

god I hate this place. I cant WAIIIIIIIIIIT to be free of you ABQ.

The natural beauty of this place can't even convince me to stay since it's people are so ugly.
People are staring at you and your husband in most cities in America, not just ABQ.

Any state full of people who get drunk and then get behind the wheel will be a state full of the worst drivers. It seems like DUIs are the biggest "thing" all over New Mexico, not just Albuquerque. And the "Californians" you speak of are the SOUTHERN Californians. I didn't see too many San Franciscans there driving wacky or anything. In fact when I would say I was from San Francisco I tended to immediately get hit with the anti-gay-marriage propaganda as if the people there are all Texas homophobes or something.

I'm hispanic, never worn a tap out shirt, never driven drunk and don't care who you sleep with. What other sterotypes do you want to go after?

I dont think they are strange though they just keep to themselves.

I was in the South last week and the people were very nice,it was nice to deal with people who had manners. Now Im not trying to talk bad about ABQ people at all its just that I like people to have manners and be friendly. I've been wanting to go down South now for a couple years though.

by South, do you mean the Deep South of the US? If so, come on. We do have manners, and we are really nice folks.

I have lived in Albuquerque since 1994. I came here from Sioux Falls SD.
Having lived in a smaller city, and growing up in a small town in rural Kentucky, I would not recommend coming here with small children to raise.
The culture is definately biased/geared toward hispanic. The schools are at the bottom of the national graph, and again geared toward the hispanics (both those born here and the ILLEGALS ALIENS from South America, who are taking over the schools). The land and housing lots are way over priced. Water is scarce and city water is expensive. The Job market is sketchy at best. Wages are WELL BELOW the national average.
Healthcare is difficult to get. (shortage of doctors, nurses, dentists). The GANGS are moving in from Mexico, California, and elswhere. There is nothing for kids to do here except for a small amusement park in Albuquerque. So they end up trying drugs, teenage sex. and other things they should not.
I would recommend a smaller city somewhere in the midwest. Even though the winters are harsh in the northern states in the midwest, the atmosphere for raising children is far above anything here in Albuquerque.
