The suburbs in the midwest were swinging right because the Democratic Party was too focused on keeping the coasts happy and not talking jobs/taxes/schools. You have to sell to the suburbs - in middle America.
While not necessarily "new", what seems to be happening is that suburbs in Coastal states now more resemble the core-city politically, while suburbs in Heartland states more resemble the rural hinterlands. In other words, suburbanites around Ohio's cities identify culturally and politically more with the cornfields another 10-20 miles further out, than with the condos 3-5 miles closer in.

As for Ohio, remove Columbus and you get Missouri.
Great. You can list a lot of examples. Those are quite obvious. Even outside of their major cities, several of those states you mentioned are much less conservative than Pennsylvania.

As for Western Pennsylvania, remove Pittsburgh and you get West Virginia.

The Pacific Northwest is ground zero for militias, white nationalists etc.

Colorado elected Boebert.

Have you been to any of these states? Boebert is clueless like much of the far right.

Go through rural Oregon and Pennsylvania. There is a huge difference in people's attitudes towards politics, environment and social issues. It's not even close.
