True. I found that alot of my friends came out of weird situations. I have friends from a long time ago. The story: I was planning to make tea to go with my lunch, then sit and watch TV. The water was shut off in the entire building. I went out to ask any random person if they had water in their apartment. I found two softball players. I was invited in and we started talking. They found out I was a geography nerd. One of them was Canadian and was amazed that I could pick out her Canadian accent and knew where Etobicoke was. I wound up making friends through a very crazy situation.
Sometimes we don't "choose" our friends. We find out who they really are in the crazy situations.

I tried using the meetup group in Georgia. It didn't work for me down there.

Try competitive activities, like sports or card games or something. Learn bridge (if you don't already know it) and in the heat of battle, so to speak, you'll really get to know people and I'd bet that you could make some close friends that way. Sports and other extra curricular activities is where I am most social sometimes.

I've attended a meetup group in town, I found that particular one mildly interesting, and may go back sometime this season. It's like fishing - you probably aren't going to catch anything that interests you on the first try, so you keep trying until you do.

What type of groups are you joining? There are a lot of social groups for happy hours etc. I happen to prefer the meetups that are smaller, more intimate so you get to know people.

Do you like wine? If so, I have a great meetup you can join with very friendly people.

You need to try different meetups based on your interest. You can't just go to one and say it isn't for you. You need to put yourself out there.

We have had great success with Meetup, but perhaps it is because we persevered until we found the MUs that work for us.

What are your interests and maybe I can recco a few.

Did you join the Minnesota Wine Meetup? I joined a couple years ago but haven't been to any meetups. I imagine it's not really a kid-friendly event.

Google meet people minnesota or make friends minnesota and see what comes up. Aside from meet up there's also sites like Meet People | Make Friends | Drinking Partners and others.
