That sounds horrible. I work in super casual culture ans most people carry their phones around all day. No one is paying attention to you taking a facebook break a few times a day.

The attendance thing seems weird to me as well. The only special rules around technology have only come up in the annual all-hands where laptops are banned so people do not multitask.

Yeah I thought the attendance comment was kind of random. I’ve never heard that an interview. I just get the feeling that this is the type of company that probably gives very little personal time off or sick time.

Or they may offer a great package .. but if you DARE use IT??? Wrath of HR comes down on you.

Worked for a company like this where if you called in sick you would get interrogated. I learned quickly to say -- no matter what -- that I had diarrhea. Because there are no follow-up questions to that. No one wants to know, lol.

Take the job, if you think you need to be baby sat. Because that's what this company sounds like; an adult day care center.

Unless the environment dictates such stringency due to safety concerns, there seems to be a significant distrust from management in their employees. Rigidity stems from insecurity and lack of respect/trust in these types of cases.

Why does it have to be their baby mama? I've seen cashiers bust out their cell phones while in line at the grocery store (calling their truck driving husband Billy Bob to bring dinner, maybe?)and I was floored. People serving the public like that should definitely not be on their cell phones. An office? Shouldn't matter AS LONG AS WORK IS GETTING DONE.

I definitely wouldn't make it in management. I just don't care about the vast majority of things people care about. "Is my work getting done?" is the question from which all others would flow.

The vast majority of managers I've worked for don't treat their subordinates like irresponsible children. Those that do are generally power-hungry or have very little trust in those they hire. Which, in and of itself, is a pretty toxic trait.

"I'm going to hire you, but I don't have enough confidence or trust in you that I could leave you alone at your desk, with a mobile device, and you'd still get your work done."

Read that aloud and let it sink in how stupid it sounds.

I don't think you're spoiled and I personally wouldn't take that job if I didn't have to. But hey, maybe I'm spoiled lol. I've always had some sort of flexibility in all my jobs, even in the ones where we worked a ton (audit). If it's not retail, customer service or the type of job where you have to clock in, it's not really that hard to give people flexibility. If we have a doctor's appointment, we either come in late, take off during the work day, work from home and so on. As long as the job gets done.

I have my cell phone on my desk because I can. I am not a child and would hate to be micro managed the way it seems this company would.

But I have some concerns. I'm used to working for a flexible boss and laid back office culture. I have to move on because I need full time. My concerns with this new company are that they are "old school." The manager brought up today that they don't allow cell phones on the desk. Really? I'm not one of those people that uses my phone all day during work. No going on the internet. And she brought up how important attendance is - I take that to mean they aren't very flexible. I wouldn't expect to take time off on a regular basis. For medical reasons I go to the Dr. twice a month. Which means I would be late two mornings a month.

I have worked for companies that allow me to use the internet as long as my work is done. I haven't been told I couldn't have my cell phone out since my first job out of high school. I'm 35. I don't know maybe I have had it too easy? It just seems like a really rigid work culture. Red Flags? Or have I been spoiled?
Huge red flags...run far far away.

I have seen that at the big W store....Heck, was working when one of the Bakery workers did it and started chatting with them while customers waited.....Frigging incredible.
